hi there.

we have recently found out that my son will need to fo vegan against

his will. Ds is 5, and has trouble with dairy. He was recently

diagnosed with an allergy to egg whites, and there we go. We were

already veg, and ds is REALLY not happy about no cheese and no eggs.

Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome. He is fine with being

veg, but vegan is not going over well, and he is not pleased.

Thanks for you help.

My son is also vegan whether he likes it or not. LOL He is allergic to

both milk and eggs. Actually he never tasted milk or eggs because we

discovered he had a severe allergy to both while I was still nursing him.

My allergist said that it was lucky we never tried him on either because it

could have killed him.

In order to help my own transition I used many alternative " cheez " recipes

from the Uncheese Cookbook and I also found the Garden of Vegan had a good

substitute " cheez " sauce. I also use a cheez sauce for making pizza that my

father (who now has a rare disease and can't eat foods with Calcium) loves,

and he is really picky and was a chef!!

I find the best thing is not to try any of the vegan alternatives until you

have been dairyfree for about 2weeks. Then try the soymilk, and recipes and

such. By then your tastebuds have sort of forgotten what dairy is supposed

to taste like.

As for eggs, they aren't too hard. You can do scrambled tofu. You can

substitute many things for eggs in baking. Try www.vegweb.com for some

great vegan recipes.

We've been doing it so long it is second nature.

I have exactly the same allergies, although I don't always keep away from those

things. When I eat them I have trouble getting a deep breath. Follow Your

Heart Gourmet Vegan " cheese " is very good. Even my veg, not vegan, kids like

it. Even my carnivore husband ate it without complaint. As for the eggs, I use

tofu. I make it fried with nutritional yeast and soy sauce to replicate fried

eggs. And scrambled is easy. Mush it up, season and heat. These are very

challenging allergies. You will have to check the packages of everything.

You'll find dairy in so many places where it is not even necessary.
