Guest guest
I have been watching the breastfeeding discussion and biting my tongue because I wasn't sure if the topic belonged here. (Although if we're going to debate whether or not to give our kids cow's milk, perhaps the two discussions do go hand in hand). I just wanted to thank all of you-- we are all parents and we all want our kids to have healthy and hopefully compassionate diets or we wouldn't be on this list. How to feed our children is a topic we all hear much about, often in the form of criticism because of our feelings on animal products. So, I wanted to thank everyone for caring. I do support the breastfeeding thank yous, not as a criticism of bottle feeders, but as a reassurance for anyone struggling with those initial couple months with an infant. I have a very good friend and neighbor whose baby is six days older than mine (and he will be a year old in six days) and if it weren't for her, and my husband, I never could have continued breast-feeding. I also stood by her as she discreetly breastfed in public for the first time. I helped her come to the decision to do it, and neither one of us looked back. I'm not sure I would thank another breast-feeding mother, but a note to discreetly say I was once there and I support you and your choice, everyone's choice, would hopefully reassure her that not everyone is going to stare or think she's doing something inappropriate. In my experience, nobody ever noticed but in the beginning, I feared what people thought. But I would never, ever say anything to a bottle feeder. I know everyone has different situations and we all have to do what works for us in the end. For me, breastfeeding was easiest (once I got the hang of it) and it didn't hurt that my husband always got up with me to change the baby before I nursed her. I'm a newspaper reporter and I did an article on choice, breastfeeding and support for choice, and I received thank you letters from moms who wanted me to know that they appreciated the fact that while I said breastfeeding was natural, it wasn't easy. So, I'm proud of us all for being mindful of what we eat in general. My opinion. Angel A.
