Guest guest
Awhile back I shared some info on Vitamin D2 vs D3, and how the D2 form is from a plant origin and D3 is from an animal origin. All true enough, but I've recently learned a little more about D3. I bought the Schiff Vegetarian Multiple vitamins recently because they are " especially formulated for the unique nutritional needs of vegetarians " . Also guranteed not to have milk, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives. So I was surprised to see that the Vitamin D was from cholecaliferol, which is the D3 variety. I called the consumer phone line (1-800-526- 6251) and talked to a friendly person who explained that cholecaliferol generally comes from either fish oil or oil extracted from sheep wool, and in this case it is from sheep wool, and therefore vegetarian, although not vegan. The person told me they use the cholecaliferol form rather than the D2 (Ergocalciferol)form because it is absorbed or utilized more easily by the human body. I haven't done the research to confirm or deny that. Of course, there are animal rights issues with the way sheep are treated in the wool industry. Anyway, I hope this info helps you make the choice that is right for you. - Alan
