Guest guest
Does anyone have any experience with their child having kidney reflux? My daughter has been diagnosed with this. The doctor is not recomending surgery at this time but she is supposed to go on a low grade antibiotic for the next year. My husband and I are a little concerned with this. Not only for the potential side effects that are listed on the antibiotic (some which are pretty bad) but the potential for her in building up a resistance to antibiotics from such long term use. The antibiotic does not actually treat the condition it just prevents UTIs which can result from the condition. My husband thinks that we could just start her regularly drinking cranberry juice, but I am not sure under the circumstances if that will help prevent infections. Anyone have any thoughts/knowledge on this? Rachael
Guest guest
My daughter who is now 6 1/2 was diagnosed with this when she was two. We took her to a pediatric urologist. At that time they took a wait and see approach, saying she could need surgery or she could outgrow it. As it turned out by the time she was about 4 1/2 she had outgrown it. I know a few kids that have this, so it's fairly common. We gave our daughter the antibiotic and she had no side effects. The way we found out that Lexi had kidney reflux is she was taken by ambulance to the hospital with a fever over 105, and barely breathing. As it turned out she had kidney reflux and reactive airway disease. She outgrew both. I gave her the antibiotic because I didn't want to risk kidney damage or another episode of a fever above 105. She had a cold and her temp was around 102. Within a half hour she could barely breath and the temp just shot up......I'm amazed to this day how quickly it all happened. Then in the ER they were going to send her home after they got the fever down, and I said no way. Something is wrong and her fever is going to go back up this evening. Sure enough we were still in the ER and I told my husband to get the nurse quick that she was burning up again. Sure enough it had shot up again within a matter of minutes. Then they admitted her and did a whole batttery of tests. Basically her system was going toxic from the kidney reflux and the reactive airway presented a host of other problems. She was there for three days. I totally understand your fear of becoming anti-biotic resistant....I worry about that all the time. Especially when I keep seeing these reports on T.V. of people not responding to any antibiotic and they die. So I know it's a tough decision. If you have not already I would take your daughter to a specialist. Did your doctor tell you how bad the kidney reflux was? I think they have a 1-5 rating scale as of severity. Lexi was somewhere in the middle. Also how old is your daughter? We chose partly to give Lexi the antibiotic also because of her age. She was right in those toddler years where they don't wipe so well and the risk for infection was high. Guest guest
I have a problem with my bladder because it does't drain completely due post partum complications after my daughter (swelling caused me not to be about to urinate & the nurses ignored it until when they finally catheterized me they drained 1.8 liters (quarts) of fluid, and so on and so on...). I find that if I drink a glass of cranberry juice everyday I won't get an infection. If I skip a day or two... whammo! I also find that garlic and acidophilous/bifidus help with avoiding bladder problems. I'm not sure when it comes to the kidney though. If I were going to not use the antibiotics I would want to take frequent urine samples for testing at the lab. You don't want to cause any long term damage. Guest guest
I don't know what kidney reflux is but when I was pregnant with my second child, the doctor said I had UTI and prescribed antibiotics which I refused to take for my unborn child's sake. I drank pure, not from concentrate, organic cranberry juice every day and when my urine was tested again, the results were negative for UTI. - " smartgirl27us " <thesmartfamily3 Tuesday, February 15, 2005 12:43 PM OT - Kidney Reflux > > > > Does anyone have any experience with their child having kidney > reflux? Guest guest
We actually found out about my daughter having it because she has had recurrent UTIs and they decided to test for it. She will be 4 in March. She has level 3 reflux. The doctor said if it is still level 3 in a year than they will do surgery. We also found out that it is hereditary and they recomended that we have our one year old son tested as well. , Kelly Weyd <kellmar98> wrote: >Did your doctor tell you how bad the kidney reflux was? Guest guest
I didn't know it was hereditary. Of course my girls are adopted and I know very little about the birth parents medical history. If I remember correctly I think Lexi was also a level 3. Good luck with the decision regarding the antibiotic. If you have any other questions ask away. Guest guest
Hi. I am 28 and had reflux when I was a child. I think they found out when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I was taking medication up until I was about 11 years old! I had constant UTI's as a child. I can remember going in and getting X ray's done, catheters put in, and having all types of tests done to me. Regardless of all this, I still was gettting the UTI's. They said that if by the time I was going to start menstruating, if I hadn't " grown out of it " , then they would do surgery. But, all of a sudden when I was almost 11 or so, it stopped happening and they said that I grew out of it. From then on, I wasn't on medication or anything, but would still experience UTI's. I always felt them coming on and would rush out and drink tons of Cranberry juice and water and try to stop them from fully developing. Now, as an adult, I still get UTI's, but take this UTI pill when I feel one coming on and I am just constantly trying to stay hydrated. My point is: I believe that if you daughter gets on the antibiotics, she will still have UTI's anyway................so, may as well try natural methods instead. smartgirl27us <thesmartfamily3 wrote: Does anyone have any experience with their child having kidney reflux?
