Guest guest
Bulk tvp can be found at some health food stores; I pay about $.80/lb. for crumble stile; chicken flavor chunks are a bit more; bacon flavor bits are about $.99/lb. ADM has a website where they sell it at higher prices, along with flavorings. I soak the crumbles in hot water for 10-20 minutes along with flavoring like Vegex or Vegemite, or soy sauce. Smoke flavoring is a good additive. Other spices can be added for different dishes; cumin, soy sauce, and hickory smoke is good for taco filling. If you add it to spaghetti sauce or soup, you don't really need to presoak or flavor it, but you can. Sometimes I cook tvp with oat bran or steel cut oat meal and maybe other grains so it turns into something like oatmeal. I add some of the flavors I mentioned. When it cools and thickens, I form it into patties, maybe coat it with bread crumbs, then cook the patties on the griddle like pancakes. These become homemade grillers or veggieburgers and can be frozen until needed. -- Dick Ford www.dick-ford.com Be kind. Be good. Be true. Be fair. Be glad. Be free.
