Guest guest
Laura- Hopefully you found some natural solutions. This is a tough condition to battle. I'm guessing it started with the arthtritis in that joint and the licking began. It is said that the dog gets a sort of endorphin rush after awhile from the licking. Not sure how true that is but I haven't seen anything that works. The baby sock idea is good if your dog doesn't chew it off. Personally, I would stay away from Rimadyl. Your dog could have problems with it because of his age. I work at a vet hospital and I'm not a big fan of it for any more that a week at a time. Good luck with the herbs. Tea tree oil is a good idea too, for healing. Chris
Guest guest
My dog, who passed away at the age of 18 this past February, was on Rimadyl for her arthritis for a long time. It helped her noticeably and she had no ill effects from it. Some dogs are sensitive to it and it upsets their stomach. Of course, if the dog should be on medication and what that medication is, is a question for your vet and you to resolve. The dog definitely will chew off the sock, they are very persistent. You need to be as persistent in putting it back on and re-wrapping it with tape. The dog will eventually get the idea that you don't want him/her to chew or lick there. Exercise for the dog is very important. A good long walk will help the arthritis and help get rid of pent up energy that may be going into this licking. The important thing is when you talk to your vet, don't let the vet stop at addressing the symptom of licking, insist on trying to address the cause. Vets, just like too many people doctors, tend to deal with symptoms and not with the underlying problem. Phil
