[ivu-veg-news] (U.S.) school-lunch bill (milk); commenting on milk

prices

SCHOOL-LUNCH BILL ROLLS FORWARD

Dairy Alert, May 26, 2004

Last week, the Senate Agriculture Committee approved a school-lunch bill

that pretty much mirrored what the House had passed in March. The measure

now goes before the full Senate. The legislation, as it now stands, would

give schools the authority to offer a wide range of milk products anytime

and anywhere on school premises. And, the USDA will continue to reimburse

school districts for cow's milk but not soy milk.

HOW TO RESPOND TO NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT MILK PRICES

Dairy Alert, May 26, 2004

While you and your banker may cheer the recent rise in milk prices, some

consumers and media pundits are getting a little cranky about shelling out

more for a gallon of milk. However, times like this give you an excellent

opportunity to educate folks about your business — if you're prepared with

the right answers.

Rather than shrug off these comments, the Professional Dairy Producers

of Wisconsin suggests that you answer with: " Prices for a fresh product like

milk go up and down all the time, depending on supply and demand. Milk

delivers you vitamins and nutrients in a way that few beverages can. It's a

healthy alternative — and a good value — when compared to sodas and juices. "
