Guest guest
Thanks for the help on this; I feel so bad for him sometimes. I'm going to the hfs this weekend with a lengthy list of things to look for! Sure I'll wind up with more than the list, as usual! Jason is on spring break this week, so it is a good time to " mess with his diet " a bit. Two years ago the dr put him on a supplement, and his first movement on it happened at preschool. He and the teacher had quite a mess to contend with. I have ground flaxseed, which I'll try adding to a smoothie. I added it to mine and couldn't tell it was there. And I'm trying hard to get rid of the dairy. My other son has the opposite problem, he goes " too much " , having small accidents at almost 7 years old. We have decreased his dairy a whole bunch to try to clear up that, plus some skin problems, and things have improved. I'm the only " full time " vegetarian in the house, and it takes quite awhile to make transitions. I'm hoping to be vegan someday, with or without the family. I know there are vegetarian people with spouses & children who are meat eaters, like me, but are there vegans who live with meat eaters? Guest guest
Laura Not wanting to further complicate your already complicated life, I just want to mention to you that the symptoms you describe in both sons may indicate a food allergy possible to gluten (the protein in wheat and it's cousins just in case you don't know). I have a daughter with Celiac Disease and three sons with non-CD gluten intolerance. My eldest presented with skin and behaviour problems with encopresis (leaking or lack of control of stooling) while my daughter had constipation, hair loss and so on. You might also want to see about having your second son x-rayed. Sometimes children with impacted stool, present with the problems you have discussed because there is so much stool contained within the digestive tract that the only way for it to pass is as you described. If he is impacted, the sac just before the rectum is stretched and the muscles cannot control the sphincter as they should. The recommendation from our ped was to eat " lots of fruit with the pips in " meaning figs, pomegranite, etc. I don't know how old you son is, but dietary fibre supplements may make him worse IF he has an impaction or is intolerant of gluten. And yes, there are many many vegans who live with meat eaters. We recently had this discussion on a recipe list I belong to for vegans and over half of us have omnivourous spouses for whom we cook. Guest guest
Laura, Do you include acidolphilus in your children's diets? That should help the digestive systems come into balance. Peace, Laura in Maryland
