I've found that a scoop of flaxseed meal in my kids morning oatmeal

really gets things moving. Adequate fluid intake is really important as well.

Peace,

Katie

Laura,

I'm sorry to hear of what you two have been through!

Do you have a health food store near you? The first thing I would suggest

is to go in and talk to them. They may have some ideas.

I would consider trying a smoothie. Try different flavors - mixed berry or

punt butter chocolate or something. Are you vegan or vegetarian? Some of

the protein drink mixes are vegan (nutribiotic's rice protein, naturade's

veg protein) and some contain only bee pollen (nature's plus spirutein).

Also I would throw into the blend: flax seed oil, some sort of greens

(spirulina, chlorella, barley, wheatgrass), and prunes (if dried, then

without sulfates) or prune juice. Sweeten with brown rice syrup or xylitol

if you don't use honey.

Flax seed oil is a very effective laxative. I hide it in my son's food -

not that he dislikes it since he's grown up eating it, but I hate it so it's

more for me, not him, that I hide it! But that way if your son doesn't like

it it's easy to get into him, and I'm talking small doses here, like a

teaspoon in a whole meal. Or 2 tsp in a small smoothie.

Greens are also available as tablets that are pretty good, at least, my

son's been eating them for a few years - don't know if yours will. :) I

use a vegan one by Nature's Plus (Kid Greenz, I believe). Others contain

something like honey or bee pollen, I think.

You might also want to get him on probiotics. There are kid versions, but

they can take adult ones too, the only difference being the dose listed on

the label. Or if it's a chewable, to make it kid friendly. Nature's Way

has chewables, but the cherry (not the orange) contains carmine, which is

crushed beetle juice. Powders are easy though (check ingredients for

casein!) because they have no taste and can be mixed into juice or water,

although it'll turn the water cloudy, so again, it'll depend on your son.

Finally, you might consider homeopathics. Many are in a lactose base (if

they're pellets), so that may be a consideration. The constipation remedies

will probably contain coffea cruda, that's coffee in homeopathic dilutions.

HTH. Keep up posted.

You used the term veg*n, so I'm assuming you are eating dairy? My daughter had

the same problem when we were lacto/ovo. But as soon as we stopped feeding her

dairy, the problem disappeared!
