Guest guest
I became aware of the dangers of hydrogenated oils before it was common knowledge. Where I now live, I can only find veggie cheeses, cream cheese, sour cream, etc. with hydrogenated oils in the ingredients. I will not feed these products to my children. Does anyone use these types of products w/o either hydrogenated oils or, of course, casein? SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. Try it! My co-op is fanatical about no carrying products with h. oils, so here are the ones they carry: Vegan Gourmet Cheese (Follow Your Heart Brand) Veganrella that rice-based cheese * cream cheese whose name I can't remember Lot's of other soy cheeses that are lactose free but not vegan (ie, Veggy Slice/Galaxy Co., Melissa's, The Good Slice) Also, Tofutti recently removed h. oils from their Better Than Cream Cheese and (I think) their Sour Cream. They are dairy-free. HTH, Karen Finance Tax Center - File online. File on time. http://taxes./filing.html
Guest guest
Thanks, Karen. The Tofutti products here still have the hydrogenated oils. I will keep checking for the new and improved versions. Guest guest
Type hydrogenated oil in your web browser and you will find many links on the matter. Basically, it is solidified oil. It is cheap and used in a surprisingly vast amount of food. It is found in most convenience foods, many foods purporting to be healthy, including low-fat foods, and it is included in most " junk " foods. The bad news is that the solidified oil remains solid in your arteries. It is said to be even worse than cholesterol-laden animal products that are well-known artery cloggers, such as butter. It is found in most products that mimic those cholesterol-laden animal products, such as most brands of margarine. http://www.recoverymedicine.com/hydrogenated_oils.htm annarosalia2001 <AnnaRosaUsa wrote: Please, could you tell me what are the dangers of the hydrogenated oils, please? Guest guest
Hydrogenated oils are treated as saturated fats by the body. The have the same if not worse atery plaquing potential...and they are in a lot of places you wouldn't expect. Guest guest
> Please, > could you tell me what are the dangers of the > hydrogenated oils, > please? > Anna Hi, Anna-- A good, brief article about the dangers of hydrogenated oils & transfats is " Alarms raised over partially hydrogenated oil " (http://www.azcentral.com/health/diet/articles/0521hydrogenatedoil.html) The Center for Science in the Public Interest also has a section about h. oils on their website: http://cspinet.org/nutrition/transfat_links.html Trans fats will be listed on nutrition labels in the US beginning in 2006, I believe. Here's an excerpt of the article: " Hydrogenated oil, which is manufactured to make liquid oils like canola and soybean oil solid at room temperature to give baked goods a longer shelf life, is used in approximately 40,0000 food products in the United States, said Margo Wootan at the Center for Science in the Public Interest....Hydrogenated oil gives packaged cookies and crackers the crispy, buttery taste we've come to expect, and most of the food we eat wouldn't taste the same without it. " But while hydrogenated oils solve a lot of problems for American food producers by making their products cheaper and longer lasting, these manufactured oils contribute to health problems among American consumers. " Adding hydrogen to liquid oil creates trans fats, which, like saturated fats, raise cholesterol and can cause heart disease. Saturated fats, however, also produce the healthy cholesterol HDL, whereas trans fats increase harmful LDL cholesterol and decrease good cholesterol. " 'On a gram for gram level, trans fats are probably worse than saturated fats,' Wootan said. " Though they have littered the American dietary landscape for the last 40 years, trans fats have been largely invisible to the consumers because they do not appear on nutritional labels.
