He's 5 years old. There are a lot of delicious, healthy, vegan foods you can pack in your son's lunch that are sure to please him. Variety is the spice of life so try varying what you pack every so often. Here are a few tips and a list of sandwich ideas: Whole grains - When you pack his sandwiches you can increase the health factor by using whole grain breads. Whole grain breads are good sources of dietary fiber, B vitamins, protein, and iron. Healthy junk food - Instead of high fat, high calorie, sugar-laden junk foods, find healthier versions to substitute. For example, replace high sugar, corn-syrupy juices with juice that is made of 100% fruit. If he wants potato chips, use lower fat versions such as soy crisps, veggie booty or even pretzel sticks. Soup is good food - Fill a thermos with healthy soups on cold days. Tomato, vegetable, corn chowder, creamy broccoli are all good choices. They're packed with veggies and vitamins too! Salad wraps - Some kids aren't into green salads, but put some dressing on it and wrap it in a tortilla and they'll eat it! Make your salad with shredded carrots, chopped cucumbers, romaine lettuce, a few vegan bacon bits, sprouts, dressing and wrap it up. You can probably sneak some spinach in there too! Desserts that please mom - If your child feels like he needs a sweet treat at the end of his meal, pack some fresh fruit. You can slice up an orange in the morning and then put it back together and wrap in plastic wrap. It will still be good at lunch time. Raisins and dates are good choices too. An oatmeal-raisin-walnut cookie made with whole wheat pastry flour isn't a terrible choice either. Dried apples or apricots are delicious, and a banana makes a good dessert too! Here are some sandwich ideas to get you started: Cashew or almond butter and jelly on whole grain bread Chickpea salad sandwich in a whole wheat pita Tofu cottage cheese and saurkraut on rye Avocado, cucumber, lettuce, and tomato with veggie mayo wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla Mock " chicken " salad on bread Veggie ham and vegan cheese with mayo, lettuce, and tomato Veggie burger or veggie chicken patty on a whole wheat bun Falafel, hummus, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and tahini in a pita In no time, your son's friends will be eyeing his food with envy. No one needs to know how healthy they are... Survey Results You gave us some great feedback from the survey we ran last month.
