Guest guest
All the moms and dads on this list are thoughtful and wonderful. At least that's been my impression, and I'm completely unbiased. It's unfortunate that a discussion on commercialism aimed at children, which would interest me even though it's a bit OT for this list, gets started by someone criticizing a little girl's decision to have a Dora party. Maybe in the future new threads can be started by simply saying " what do you think about this? " as opposed to " how could you do that? But I had to respond to let you know you weren't the only horrible mother on the list that lets her child watch television. Wait, I think social services is knocking now. Gotta run! Guest guest
Hi, I just wanted to thank everyone on the list for their support on this subject. I also wanted to add that I do totally understand Stephanie's point about commercialism and kids. I think things come accross in these e-mail posts a little differently than we intend them to sometimes. I don't believe she meant any harm. I wish I did have the time and energy to shelter my kids from everything I find questionable and to do the research to find out what is questionable. I guess we all need to make the very personal decisions about what issues are most important to us. I know that I could very easily drive myself nuts trying to take on all of the " evils " in this world. Now on to the party. It was great! We ended up using several recipes from veg-web (a great site for veggie recipes), and did a fruit and veggie tray along with chips and guacamole and several dips from Trader Joe's. I also made little mini pizzas. I really liked the idea of a burrito bar, and I think we will try to use it at the next party (little sister's first birthday next summer). I don't remember who suggested Nori Rolls, but I was interested in how you make them? I also made the frosting using regular organic powdered sugar colored with chocolate powder, blueberries, strawberries, carrots, and turmeric. We only had one kid complain " where's the candy " when the pinata only had toys in it. Thank you for all the great suggestions. Stephanie, Glad to hear the party was a success! I can tell you how I make Nori rolls. The prep. is the most time consuming. I use sweet brown rice. You can also use white sushi rice. We have a rice cooker, and I have also used my pressure cooker. Cook the rice before you plan to make the rolls. You want to rice to be at room temp. It is best to have a rolling mat available. These are some of the fillings I use. Carrots, cucumber, avocado, green bean, mushroom, sprouts, beets, broccoli, squash( all types), tofu(marinated is best) and tempeh. I have a dish of water with rice vinegar and ume plum vinegar and a pinch of sweetener. Nori sheets, and a wooden rice paddle. Place the nori sheet on the mat and put the rice on the nori using the paddle the has been dipped into the water. Spread out to the horizontal ends. Then put in the fillings. Use 3 at the most. Put the fillings in the center horizonally out to the edges. Then roll away from you. Dip your hands in the water and run it over the edge to seal. Then use a sharp knif to cut into sections. Wet the knife inbetween cuts. Hope this helps! Peace, Laura
Guest guest
Stephanie, Glad to hear that your daughters party was a success.. i have my daughters party coming up on the 13th so we shall hope that party goes over well... vegweb is in my favorites and i have my own recipe box... i think its a must have site for all veggies...great recipes ive tried several and yuuuuuumy... I believe u can shelter ur kids only soo much... no matter how much we try to prevent them from outside influence there is gonna be some influence... instead of fighting commericialism i more worried about peer influences, drugs, alcohol, etc... im not saying stuff on tv shouldnt be moderated but their is also other things that can be worse off... i will control as much as i can... and hope i raise her to make the correct decisions.. Guest guest
Stephanie, thanks for understanding my point of view. When I asked about your motivation I was definitely not intending to criticize. Since your choice was different from one I would make I wanted to understand it better. I'm glad to know the party went well. Over the summer I took A LOT of heat for being a beekeeper (I don't harvest the honey I keep bees to pollinate my organic garden. And believe me if they want to leave they can and do, half my hive left in a swarm in August and are now probably living in some old tree in the farm behind us)so I know how it feels to be under the gun. I never meant to start a controversy just wanted to know your motivation for chosing a commercial character one question and blammo big controversy. Anyway, I used to live in Seattle we were in Greenwood for 5 years. I was wondering where in the city you are.
