Guest guest
I just want to let you know that I had the same problem with my doctor. He said my son was too thin and I should stop nursing and give him formula. This might be the wrong answer, but I just ignored him. I knew my son was fine, I took him to a lactation specialist who said he was fine, and now he is a super healthy 4 1/2 year old. We just went to get his pre-school physical done, and saw a different doctor in the practice who looked at his chart and said he is healthy just like it looks he always has been! Take the doctor with a grain of salt! Danielle http://www.VegetarianRealtor.tk
Guest guest
What is up with this whole idea that fat=healthy, that a baby must be fat? My husband's aunt, a dietician for heaven's sake, commented on my thin daughter: " My kids that had formula always gained weight better than the ones I breastfed. " I told her, " Yep, formula makes 'em big alright. Breastmilk makes them smart and healthy. " Really, given free access to breasmilk and (later) healthy food, each baby will go to his/her natural setpoint weight. Some will be in the 95th, some in the 5th, and each will be just right for him or herself. My daughter's doctor, alarmed that she had " fallen off the chart " at 9 months (went from her usual 5th percnetile to " negative 1 " ) gave her a homeopathic tonic and told me to push solids and give solids before nursing. I gave her to tonic, but conitinued to read her cues regarding whether she wanted food or boobie. At 13 months she was back to her usual curve and the doc was so glad she had solved that " problem " . According to my LLL leader, there's a study showing that it is very common for bf babies to follow exactly that pattern because the charts are based on ff babies. So her " recovery " had nothing to do with the doc's recommendations. Any doctor that tells you to stop breastfeeding is a complete quack (unless you have the extremely rare child that is actually allergic to breastmilk, then you really do have to stop) and I wouldn't trust anything they said on any other subject, either.
