" ...not only vegetarians but most others eating diets with adequate

plant

material get most of their long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from non-fish

sources. In fact, the reason the fish-derived fats, EPA and DHA, are

not

considered essential fats is that almost all people have enzymes to

convert

the plant-derived omega-3 fat rapidly into EPA and DHA. Fish is a

double-edged sword, especially because fish has been shown to increase

heart

attack risk if it is polluted with mercury....Fish is one of the most

polluted "

Thanks for that information ... I heard *after* I delivered from co-workers

that I should have been taking DHA and I have stressed out about it ever since

thinking I did something wrong for my baby. One co-worker finally told me,

" Laurie, we have been putting out brain surgeons for a long time without moms

taking this DHA " So I started to stress less about it, but I have been a

vegetarian for 23 years now and did not even consider eating fish for omega

3's.. but lots of tofu :-)

I am new to the group. I have been reading for a while, but just figured out

how to e-mail a response. I will be interested in knowing if I do it right. I

had my first child on March 4 of this year and have an adopted daughter (who was

already eating meat by the time I adopted her at age 6). It has been a

challenge raising her, and now I find myself in a different challenge in raising

my new daughter vegetarian. Her dad is okay with me raising her vegetarian (he

is not veg.). I know I will need a lot of support. Glad to have found this

group.

I look forward to more discussions. Hopefully I did this correctly. Not too hip

on abbreviations either.. will need help with that .. laurie
