Guest guest
Here's the site I mentioned, it's what helped convince me to eliminate honey. http://www.vegetus.org/honey/honey.htm And really, is it *that* hard to take honey out of one's diet? I haven't missed it, I use brown rice syrup, maple syrup, and other sweeteners. ~Doh ----------- " I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. Guest guest
His information about the harsh practices of the big commercial honey outfits are sadly true. However, I take exception with two of his arguments. #1 Our native pollinators are not being outcompeted by European honey bees. It is the use of poisons (aka pesticides) that have greatly reduced or even obliterated the populations of some native pollinators. #2 the Langstroth hive was developed as a humane alternative to the skep. It's design allows the hive to be maintained without harming the bees. Even my hive which has the honey left on needs a little tidying up every now and again. Oh, and for what it's worth, most beekeepers have a hive or two in their backyard, the hives are never moved the colonies are permited to requeen themsleves the queens are definitely not artificially inseminated and the bees are left with enough honey on the hive to take them through the winter and then some. It's just like the huge differences between factory farming and family farmers. I respect your choice not to eat honey, it is the product of the bees efforts and it contains bee enzymes but I would hate to have you all think that all beekeepers fit the profile outlined in that website.
