food irradiation

I dont know a lot about it but what they do is expose the food to

high levels of radiation in order to disrupt the DNA of bacteria.

Basically it sterilizes the food. Several problems with it are that

it also kills any good bacteria in the food, causes the food to lose

some of its nutritional value, changes the molecular structure of the

food itself (who knows what long term health effects this could

have!!!!), etc. There are also the safety and environmental

concerns with the irradiation proccess itself (ie: the factories

where it is done - transportation and storage of radioactive

material, possible leaks, waste products, etc.). And of course some

say it is way for the meat industries to get even lazier than they

are. How about some nice fecal matter served up with your steak (not

that anyone on this group would have to worry about that!!!), if its

irradiated any e. coli contamination would be wiped out, so they need

take less care to " clean " the meat. Of course other things than meat

can be irradiated but thats the big one. I think a lot of spices are

irradiated also though, to give them a longer shelf life. Well,

thats about all I know about it.
