Guest guest
Now that I live in the south, I thought it'd be fun to make greens and black-eyed peas for New Year's Day. What is a good way to make b- e peas? I've got the greens covered(have been trying to make those for months : ) In Cleveland (where I grew up) there were so many differnt people and cultural traditions, we always did the sauerkraut and pork, neither of which I liked! melissa p , " artichoke72x " <artichoke72x> wrote: > > i haven't heard of lentils....but it makes sense. > > my family has always had black eyed peas on new year's > day....for good luck. i remember i didn't like b > e-peas when i was a child, so i would only eat > 12...one for each month (now i love them!). this may > be a southern thing. we also eat greens on new years > day to represent the riches that will come in the next > year (didn't work for us in 2005! ha ha). > what traditions do y'all have? > susie > > --- organic_homestead <organic_homestead> > wrote: > > > Well, for the past few years I've made lentils every > > New Years. Guest guest
sauerkraut and pork with mashed potatoes was my grandma's NEW YEAR day food.... She and my grandpa were from Ohio! =) our big " tradition' would be staying up as late as we can, eating trays of food... finger food.. appetizers or whatever... what my little girl calls ' a feast! " and my son calls a party! =) On Dec 28, 2005, at 11:28 AM, Melissa wrote: > > > Now that I live in the south, I thought it'd be fun to make greens > and black-eyed peas for New Year's Day. The sauerkraut, pork, and mashed potatoes feast is a German/ Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. We used to celebrate this way as well. If I'm remembering correctly, the symbolism was described as the sauerkraut for health, the pork for luck (or was it the other way around?), and green peas for wealth. -Erin
