Guest guest
Hi Dawn and Bridget! Yes, doulas are a great companion...Especially if you're birthing in a hospital. Many of us no longer delegate our wishes once we're in the throes of labor...And our partner has such a strong emotional attachment, it's hard for he/she to be able to voice concerns and ask questions. It's too easy to just let everyone 'take over' your birth. A doula is your advocate as well as your companion. She is also there for the partner's needs as well and reminds them about what the need to be doing. Doulas come in many forms. I had a homebirth and my husband was my doula. He knows more about birth than most women I know (even after giving birth). He read many textbooks and could have delivered the baby himself. He was amazing. But, here at home we're in charge. Once you leave the house, others are in charge. It is a MUST to have someone put YOUR feelings before anything. Dawn, yes the midwest is a little funny about childbirth. I believe Illinois, midwifery is illegal. Midwifery is only allowed in hospitals. I think. Anyway, dark ages!! Texas is a great place to live when it comes to choices about homebirthing and schooling. Bridget, if you have ANY questions at all...Please don't hesitate to email me in private. I'll be very happy to answer. Warmly, Allison Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now. http://mailplus.
Guest guest
Well, to be a bit vulgar, I have " bagged my limit " with three-- and no partner anyway!-- so I can only reminisce. But, having a male standing next to one and either having no clue or getting ill or both does not make for a very good experience. I am in a Massage therapy course right now, and am really excited about helping people in this way... I think you may be right about the midwives here, although weren't they at home in the middle ages? LOL Luckily, I had very easy births, but I can just imagine how much nicer it would be to have someone there to let me have my " labor fuel, " and I'm not talking about ice chips!! Anyway, I would be interested in finding out about the rules for doulas here, since the hospital (four years ago) had everyone leave but the father-- and I was ok with having others present. I wonder how we'd be able to get them into the room without having to smuggle! Anyway, I admire and respect any person who is able to keep their head and heart during these blessed events... and I can imagine that the emotional and mental health of the whole family is improved with every " baby step " we take in that direction! -dawn , Allison Nations <allyanne2001> wrote: > Hi Dawn and Bridget! > Yes, doulas are a great companion...Especially if > you're birthing in a hospital.
