Guest guest
Just to try how much bigger is a single, formatted document, than many small ones, I tried to do this job for the Sandwiches. First of all, I had lost track of the message where it said where all the sandwiches had been put, and I thought it would be quicker to go to the Files to find it myself. I looked under Snacks, under Brunches, under Breads, under Various, nothing! Finally I ran a search and I found that message. It was under Main Dishes! Anyway, I went there and opened the text files one by one, copy-pasting them into a Word document, making headers, editing un-needed info, standardizing a bit the ones from the members (some wonderful suggestions there, by the way! Can't wait to try them), putting more relevant titles where the title didn't give information on what was inside ets... and saved it. It was difficult to choose a category, so I put it in Appetizers-Snacks. It was 92KB. Then I went back to Sandwiches subfolder and counted by hand the KBs of the single files. Well, I may have made a mistake, but it was around 45-46KB. So the formatted document is more or less double in size. On the other hand, it's easier to download and search. Visit and tell me what you think! Irene (who is on a diet, and would kill to be able to eat a sandwich!)

When I eat a sandwich, it's the main part of a meal, so that's where I put it. I tried to list everything under the major folder headings to help you navigate your way around the files. Once you get used to it you should have no problem...... though I do agree that the " Main Dishes " and " Side Dishes " is somewhat confusing... and that was set up when I got there, so I went with it... but maybe I shouldn't have. Of course, there's a million ways to organize things -- I took my cues off a large vegetarian recipe site, and followed their lead -- and when I saw they also had Main and Side categories, I just went with it. To me " Main " says it's a one-dish meal or that it comprises the biggest portion of a meal. A dish of starches and veggies is Main to a vegan/vegetarian. But a dish of peas with sauce on it is a Side. ??? The major work was in finding all the recipes and copying them to the correct files, which often meant re- formatting them. I also tried to leave in people's comments about the recipes -- leave some of the list members' personalities in there, where applicable. > It was difficult to choose a category, Aha! Now you see... yes it IS difficult to always know where things should go. > so I put it in Appetizers-Snacks. Hmmm... when I'm looking for an appetizer, I think of something to serve as a first course when there's guests, or something to just have as a between-meals snack -- little things like crackers. I think of a sandwich as a meal, don't you? See, it's so confusing. Maybe sandwiches should have their own file under the major headings? Unfortunately, all the work will have to be re-done to accomplish this, as doesn't allow files to be moved around -- unless some of you know something I don't? Otherwise, this would be a quick and easy fix. > It was 92KB. Then I went back to > Sandwiches subfolder and counted by hand the KBs of the single files. Well, I may have made a mistake, but it was around 45-46KB. So the formatted document is more or less double in size. I'm glad you paid attention to this. There is a limit to how much space gives us, plus, with them threatening to become a pay site, if this list is to remain free to us, they will cut down on our file size allottment, from what they've been saying (I'm a list owner, so I've followed this). It might be very wise to limit our file sizes. I was pleased/surprised to see how much I got in the files for small sizes... using their s/w. > On the other hand, > it's easier to download and search. I can see your point... but I like the individual ones because it's less hassle when I want to print one... but if the popular opinion is that people would like them grouped, then we can make those changes... probably would be better to stick to a file format, since it's less Kb. And in case ever splits on us, or makes a booboo, probably someone should keep a backup of the files. > Visit and tell me what you think! I visited your file, Irene, and I think it's great that you're interested in helping with the files. My computer took a LONG time to open the file (and I do have Word on my computer, though some may not), and when I tried to exit it, it again took a long time -- and told me it was trying to upload an update to my computer, which I cancelled... and then I clicked on Messages to make my computer stop that -- so I found it extremely cumbersome to get in and out of. Maybe Word files aren't so good in there, especially with people's all having different configurations on their computers? And with the larger file size? As to the organization of it... how do others want it? All sandwiches grouped together? Or a " Sandwich " file with each listed separately? I hope others go check out the " Sandwiches " file under " Main Dishes " ... and then go check out the " Sandwiches " file under " Appetizers " / " Snacks " and tell us what they want.
