She meant 'hamburger substitute' or 'ground beef

substitute'. She lived in England and wrote her book there

(although she was an American).

 

The British call ground beef 'mince' or 'minced meat'. My

husband is English, so I can usually 'translate'. :)

 

I'd use something like 'Gimme Lean' or those (Morningstar

Farms?) 'crumbles'. TVP would probably work also and be a

lot cheaper.
