When I was a Peace Corps volunteer a few years ago, most of us

volunteers would be craving veggies other than rice and beans. There

were 2 veg resturants in the country and they were great, but really,

the best place and the cheapest (we ate what the common folks ate all

the time) was the Harry Krishna place. There was no menu, you ate what

was being served, but as they are stict veggies, it was oK and always

yummy. I know that they have temples in most countries, so maybe go to

their website to find out their locations the next time you travel.

As far as eating " native " I say go for it! As long as it is peeled,

boiled or fried, it should be OK. Just watch out for the ice, beer and

soda are always a good choice as critters can't live in them. Coffee

too, my dona made some amazing coffee strait off the bush. Starbucks

has nothing on her! Street vendors that have tin carts that look horrid

usually have the best food that is cheap. When I travel, I always go

in Peace Corps style. I hate tourist areas and you learn so much more

about where you are... people are always wonderful and the food is

great! Besides, from what I have seen and heard of American

resturants, I am pretty certain that their kitchens are a bit

cleaner... I know that my dona would never have served anything bad.

In all the time that I was there, over 2 years, the only time i ever

got sick was from my own cooking. And I ate at some really non-tourist

areas and from the kitchens of some folks miles away from any

electricity.

The greatest thing is green coconuts fresh off the tree, mangos still

warm and other fruit that don't have american names... Hmmm, I have to

go back!
