Guest guest
Just to throw my two cents worth into the debate...did the doctor mean to cut back on heavy carbs? Food can essentially be broken into three groups, protein, fats and carbs (sugars). Carbs are then divided into heavy and light. Potato, pasta, bread are heavy carbs and fruit and veg are light. Generally people fill up a lot on the heavy carbs but most of the nutrition comes from the light ones. Maybe the doctor meant to focus less on these heavy carbs and instead on protein (and lighter carbs)? That would make sense to me. Guest guest
Reasonably informed doctors advocate a number of different positions regarding healthy limits on carbs. The original poster of this info was unclear on this point when he wrote, " Reducing carbohydrates in favor of proteins is not a healthy approach. " Sounds to me like your reference to heavy and light carbs correlates to how carbs are grouped using the glycemic index as a standard. For those with diabetic problems, managing this info is extremely important for gaining control of their blood sugar level. Sadly, I've read much misinformation and incomplete information on this topic. You comment regarding a focus on protein and lighter carbs relates somewhat to what the Atkins diet proposes, and that topic also involves a much bigger debate.
