Guest guest
Hey Everyone: I am new to the list and this lifestyle, still trying like the author of the following grocery list to make the transition to " full-vegetarian " . I like the term " aspiring-vegetarian " that another member mentioned. Just tried tofu for the first time last night wasn't a huge hit. Anyway, I had a few questions about the " grocery list " that was posted. A number of things were located in the " fridge " section that I would not necessarily have put in the fridge. However, some of these items I have never bought before so really don't know best storage. >>>> These things are always on hand, in the refrigerator, freezer, and in the pantry: Fridge (hehehe...very long list): skim & 1% milk FF plain yogurt LF plain yogurt LF vanilla yogurt cottage cheese Almond-based Cheddar Cheese (Lisanatti brand) Almond-based Mozzarella Cheese (Lisanatti brand) Eggland eggs (supposedly higher in omega...) Egg Beaters Teriyaki Seitan chopped walnuts pistachios pecans sliced almonds Vital Wheat Gluten Wheat Germ Whole Wheat Flour All-Purpose Flour Better for Bread Wheat Flour (bread machine) Bread Machine Yeast golden raisins black raisins pitted dates Mission figs prunes dried cranberries dried pineapple coconut flakes carob chips Goldie's Carob bars (crunch, mint, praline, orange peel, and plain - all types olive oil Balsamic vinegar wine vinegar rice wine vinegar white vinegar mango chutney sesame oil Hoisin sauce lite soy sauce ketchup tonkatsu sauce (Japanese sauce, made with apples and spices) chili sauce red hot sauce (cayenne) mustard powder cornstarch maple syrup all-fruit spreads (blueberry, strawberry, peach, and apricot) cashew butter almond butter peanut butter macadamia butter sesame butter salad carrots celery onions garlic yellow apples corn tortillas homemade salt free wheat bread homemade low salt wheat germ muffins <<<< Specifically I wonder about.... -*Wheat Germ* I recently purchased some off the " dry goods " shelf " at the store. Does it need to be refrigerated?? Also, I bought some but now not sure what to do with it, any suggestions?? -*Various flours* were also listed as being stored in the fridge. I have mine in Tupperware and the extra stored in the freezer. Is that OK?? -*Olive Oil* I thought it was OK sealed and stored in a dark cupboard. Not OK?? -*Vinegars* Haven't ventured into any of the " specialty " types yet but usually have plain old white vinegar around and just store it in the cupboard. Hmmmm....if all these things do need to be in the fridge I am in trouble. I hardly had enough room this week for all the nice veggys I bought for my stir frys, veggy stew and Quinoa/Broccili Casserole. Maybe I need a second fridge, haha... or maybe just two shopping days a week. Another question, do many people make their own bread?? I am thinking of getting a bread maker but not sure I would use it enough. We have an excellent HFS about 10 minutes away. I bought some sprouted grain tortillas there, heard sprouted grains are supposed to be good, tasted yummy anyway. Also there is a bakery not too far away that makes a variety of organic buns/breads and pizza dough. I do have access to good quality breads so I am just not sure if I should bother trying to make my own. For those that do, is the taste and cost savings worth the effort?? Yes. Most brands should say it on the jar. Take a look. Yours might too. >>>-*Various flours* were also listed as being stored in the fridge. I have mine in Tupperware and the extra stored in the freezer. Is that OK?? I think it probably is. I store mine in a plastic canister in my kitchen cabinets. It seems to do alright. >>>-*Olive Oil* I thought it was OK sealed and stored in a dark cupboard. Not OK?? I sure hope it's ok because that's how I store mine. >>>Hmmmm....if all these things do need to be in the fridge I am in trouble. I know I need a bigger frig or an additional one!! LOL >>>Another question, do many people make their own bread?? It's a nice dream for me. I'm not that ambitious though. :-) ~Janice~ Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says... " I'll try again tomorrow " . I keep my wheat germ in the fridge simply because once it is opened it is no longer vacuum packed and will start to deteriorarte or go stale if not used right away... and I don't use it alot personally; I should probably use more. But I do like to sprinkle it on things like salads (veggie tossed salads etc) , bowls of oatmeal cereal, sprinkle it into muffin batter before baking, and use it in streusel toppings for muffins; oh, and also sprinkle a spoonful into yogurt, too. It is very good and versatile and lends a nice texture to foods. > -*Various flours* were also listed as being stored in the fridge. I have > mine in Tupperware and the extra stored in the freezer. Is that OK?? That sounds fine to me. Right now where I live and this time of the year, those mealie moths are starting to get inside my house and trying to find a warm winter home, so I should move my flour into the fridge to keep them out of it; Tupperware doesn't even keep them out!. > -*Olive Oil* I thought it was OK sealed and stored in a dark cupboard. Not > OK?? I keep mine in the cupboard, too. Mine gets hardened if I store it in the frige and I hate to have to thaw it out before using it in recipes. > -*Vinegars* Haven't ventured into any of the " specialty " types yet but > usually have plain old white vinegar around and just store it in the > cupboard. Me too. As far as baking my own bread, I rarely do that. I do it more often during the cold winter months and sometimes I enjoy buying the frozen whole wheat doughs to bake up an easy-quick fresh loaf of bread. There are few scents as comforting and homey as the smell of fresh baked bread. *s* ~ PT ~ My country is the world and my religion is to do good. ~ Thomas Paine, " The Rights of Man "
