hi, ronnie,

welcome to the group, and congratulations on wanting to make the change to a

vegan lifestyle! i'm a total vegan myself, so if you have any questions,

please feel free to let me know.

you should know that free-range is not a regulated term, so basically, the

farms can leave the door to the barn open but still keep the chickens in cages,

or can keep the chickens in extremely bad conditions but not in cages. it's

a VERY loose term.

a great source for vegan cooking, aside from the files on this site, is

www.vegweb.com. you'll find some amazing recipes there. i'd also like to

recommend the following books to you to help get you started and to maybe help

answer some of the questions you no doubt have:

-the complete idiot's guide to being vegetarian (suzanne havala)

-the vegan sourcebook (joanne stepinak-- get any of her cookbooks, too!!!!)

-vegan nutrition: pure and simple (michael klaper, m.d.)

-vegan handbook (from the vegetarian resource group, www.vrg.org)

as far as periodicals are concerned, the vegetarian journal is a very

informative magazine for vegans, and the vegetarian times magazine has recently

added

more vegan recipes to its arsenal. veggie life magazine labels all of their

recipes lacto/ovo, apian (containing honey), or vegan.

i hope this helps get you started, and once again, welcome to the group!

I have a question. Please don't take offense to this, I am

genuinely curious!

Why do you still eat chicken and fish? I've never really understood

why people give up " red " meat and not the other types. I know I've

heard things about " red " meat being fattier etc, but chicken and

fish are just as full of hormones and are raised in just as inhumane

places.

I grew up in MI and went up there last year to see my family who all

obtained fishing licenses and I was appalled to read the literature

that went along with it. They had warnings not to eat certain types

of fishes more than once a week, or not at all if you're pregnant or

whatever due to high levels of mercury and other poisons in them (I

don't recall what they all were.) Some of the warnings were mostly

for Great Lakes fish. Based on reading that, I wouldn't eat any

fish even if I did! Apparently the Great Lakes are so highly

polluted by runoff from farms and factories that they have to print

these warnings. It's kind of scary to me and a good argument not to

eat fish at all!

===> I can help, if you want it. Would you like to see a video online

with a few clips showing what 'free range' really means? I think there

may be some in 'meet your meat' [ http://meetyourmeat.com ]. If not

there, I know there are some at PETA TV [ http://www.petatv.com ].

That alone could help ya quit! ;~)

Welcome to the group! :-]

Warm welcome to the list, ronric99.

We have many recipes in our files so do check them out.

I understand how it is when one wishes to move into

vegetarianism gradually. For some people it is a big step

and they need time to find alternatives. Thankfully there are

many food items available now to make your transition

easier. If you aren't a naturally creative cook, or don't have

a hankering for " tofu fifty ways " , you can still find food to

please and feel satisfied. Don't hesitate to ask for specific

help here. We are blessed with a list full of very helpful people

who have been at it a long time.

Do listen to the wise caution that has been offered about

eating fish. Sadly, too much can be quite harmful as many

of them are full of toxic mercury. If you eat it more than once

a week and have any health concerns, getting a blood test

is a good idea. Better to just avoid it as much as possible

really.

I am confident that as you delve into the vegetarian recipes

and info online you will have no problem giving up poultry

and fish. You will do fine and enjoy the changes. Bravo for

wanting to make them. :)

Well, welcome to the group - but you are nowhere near the 'lifestyle' if

you are still eating chicken and fish, you know ;=) What you do to be a

vegetarian is to stop eating animals - including the ones that fly or

crawl or swim; to adopt a vegan diet one avoids, in addition, animal

products including dairy, eggs and honey - etc. To adopt a *vegan

lifestyle*, as you say, it's a bit more, foregoing wool, silk, leather,

and anything that in its production would have involved use of animal

products or brought distress to animals. (Other members will perhaps

forgive the oversimplification - please ;=)) But, hey, one thing at a

time, eh?

But please do reconsider eating poultry and fish - even if you are in

this 'lifestyle' purely for your own health reasons. It's not good for

you!!!! and you'll feel better when you give it away.

Best,

Pat
