B12 deficiency is quite rare, even among Vegans. This

is probably because the body is fairly efficient at

" recycling " the vitamin, and only tiny amounts are

needed to maintain a healthy level in one's system.

Also, there are a ton of B12 fortified foods out there

now, so most strict vegetarians can probably get

plenty of B12 just by eating " normal " foods like

fortified Soy Milk.

It has been theorized that the reason people have a

difficult time getting B12 from non-animal sources

naturally is because we don't engage in the same

eating behavior as animals; i.e. we don't forage and

eat what we find directly out of the dirt. Animals

get their B12 from the dirt, but today's humans

thoroughly wash just about everything we eat, and

rightfully so with all the chemicals and filth sprayed

on our soil today. In any case, think about taking a

B12 supplement to replace the dirt in your diet, not

the meat. :-)

Women who are nursing or pregnant need to be very sure

that they are getting enough B12, because the infant

has not had time to build up any B12 in the system and

can become B12 deficient more easily.

http://www.vegansociety.com/html/info/b12sheet.htm is

one good link among many on this subject.
