Guest guest
Serious query. Does anyone know anything about Coral Calcium? It's touted as a cure-all from everything from degenerative diseases attributed to aging incl: oseoporosis, heart disease, allergies, kindey stones and gallstones. It seems to me that if it comes from coral it must be non-veg. Although the original 'waters' that did such good stuff for Okinawa etc. were from around coral environments, surely the current stuff that is in something like a teabag must, at the least, be ground-up coral? Just wondering. Best, Pat -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. Guest guest
The whole calcium supplement industry is built on a sham financed by the dairy industry. In fact, even the current RDA of calcium is ridiculously high and is the result of heavy lobbying on the part of the dairy industry. Fad supplements like coral calcium are only symptoms of a huge misconception on the part of the American public. Here's the real truth: Calcium requirements in the human body are largely tied to protein consumption. When we consume protein, the body needs calcium to process it. If we aren't getting enough calcium in relation to protein, the body takes some calcium out of the bones. If we are constantly getting a negative calcium balance, the eventual result is osteoporosis. Dairy products are actually a contributing factor in the development of osteoporosis because milk only has a 32% calcium absorption rate (the percentage of the calcium in milk that the body actually uses), but is very high in protein. The body has to use all the calcium in the milk, plus take some out o the bones, to digest the milk. Eating meat is probably the biggest factor in a negative calcium balance because meat contains very little calcium but is very high in protein. The RDA for calcium keeps getting higher and higher in an attempt to prevent osteoporosis, but the standard American meat and dairy eating diet causes the negative calcium balances that lead to osteoporosis. Obviously, the answer is not to take more calcium supplements. The answer is to lower protein intake and to eat more calcium rich vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli and dark leafy greens. The best way to do this is by adopting a vegetarian diet. The above is not a theory, by the way. It is well-established medical fact that has been exhaustively researched and proven in numerous medical studies. The reason few Americans are aware of these facts is because the meat and dairy industries have been very effective in muddying the waters with sham studies and misleading statements.
