Hi, I am Pat (santbrown), ovo-lacto vegetarian, currently

living in southern Ontario.

My usual cooking style now is Indian Vegetarian, with excursions into

Thai, Indonesian, and Chinese. When I am being 'unconventional' and in a

hurry, I make a light meal of Italian-style pasta dishes. My soups -

also good for light meal - come from *anywhere* but are almost always spicy.

Sorry! I'm a bit tardy for the roll call, but it was Friday night, you know...I

was out causing a ruckus as usual...hee hee ;)

Okay, personal info answers:

Name: Alison, a.k.a. ana_spryte, Arachnie, Alley Cat

Location: Petaluma, CA (northern section of SF Bay Area)

Veggie type: I guess technically I am lacto-ovo-veg. Although I don't eat eggs

by themselves, I don't mind them being in baked things, and I'll eat the little

bits in fried rice and such.

The thing is...well, I just don't eat much anyway, and most of what I do eat is

raw veggies, for their low level of certain nutrition elements. (I just love

being vague...)

Group question: Well, I don't really cook. I live at home currently, and I'm not

home for meals often. When I lived on my own, I didn't do much cooking other

than using the microwave or steaming up some vegetables. (See my above comment

about not eating much - it follows that I wouldn't cook much, either.) But when

I have had occasion to cook, I prefer Italian/Mediterranean, or some types of

Asian.

what type of vegetarian or diet do you ascribe to currently.

Group question: How would you define your cooking style

most often?

Example: tex-mex or some other ethnic speciality etc...

My answers: I am Robin aka PT or feral, listowner/mod,

I live in the Pacific Northwestern part of the USA; specifically

Southern Oregon. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian.

I would define my cooking style as pretty basic " farm-girl "

or hinterland cuisine. I use simple, commonly found ingredients

and make mostly non-ethnically inspired dishes. I would have

to observe that I have adopted more from Mexican cooking and the

Southwestern influenced styles of cooking lately; love those chiles!

Beatrice, I think it depends on where in CA. People outside of our lovely state

seem to think it's the same all over, but as we well know, that's not true.

There are parts of CA that are more redneck and conservative than the deep

south!

But I live here in the wonderfully tolerant (most of the time), hippie-dippie,

bohemian, laid-back, open-minded, completely gay (as some people seem to

think...LOL) tree-huggin'-yet-still-SUV-lovin' San Francisco bay area.

Vegetarianism is alive and well around these parts, and is probably nearly on

par, percentage-wise, with meat-eating diets. Lots of great veggie restaurants,

and almost all of the stores carry Amy's or Cedarlane products, or other similar

veggie/health-wise/organic products.

Hi group. I'm Tempest, 28 and married with zero kids and one black

lab named Billy, living in Cleveland, OH but originally from

Kingston, Ontario. I've been a veggie for 7 months now and am doing

quite badly at it, mostly because of my refusal to cook for myself.

I've lived on a lot of Indian take-out and Subway sandwiches and am

now trying to branch out by trying some of the strange-looking

containers of grass and weeds I find in my local grocery store in the

hope that I will soon be able to embrace all vegetables. I recently

discovered taboule and hummus on french bread, so I suppose I'll

stick with that for a few months. For variety I've also found that a

few corn nuts on top add extra zest. Yummy!

Hi Everyone!

I'm Giovanna (guimaraes17)

I'm 28 and currently live in northern New Jersey (not vegetarian

friendly at all btw. We have one Whole Foods about 1 mile from my house

- Thank God! - and that's it! I'll be moving to southern California

next year and expect a better vegetarian experience there.

Cooking style? Hmmmmm. I love Persian (without the meat) and Italian

cuisine. Persian is my absolutely favorite though. I love Greek foods

too!

Now I hope this " roll call " thing doesn't become a mandatory check-

in, like it has in other groups I've belonged to...

I'm cheryll, 48, married with one son age 6. Still here in " lurk "

mode mostly. I would describe myself as a vegan " wanna-be " , I try to

avoid animal products as much as possible, but can't always do it,

due to practicality. I honestly don't have the time to cook every

single thing from scratch, though I try, and I ALWAYS read ingredient

labels. My cooking style is whatever suits me at the moment, and

tends to be swayed by what I have on hand, and also what my kid will

eat (unless I feel like cooking a separate meal)...Right now I'm

really into Middle Eastern and also Mediterranean cooking.

I just joined this group, so I'll jump in at this " roll call " . I am not a

vegetarian at this time, but am interested in learning and in finding

recipes to incorporate into our life. My dh and I have some very good

friends who are vegetarians, and dining with them and recent discussions

have gotten me thinking about our lifestyle. I know in my heart that if the

meat we eat was not so benignly prepackaged, but instead had to be gotten by

actually seeing the living animal first, I would have adopted this lifestyle

years ago!

Right now I am sure that my dh is NOT interested in giving up meat, but he

does enjoy vegetables, fruits, and grains very much and I've recently

introduced some tofu dishes to him and have cut our meat intake quite a bit.

Looking forward to what this list has to offer,

Judy

Hi Karen. Wow I'd like to try an Ethiopian dish. Thanks for the chapati

recipe...I put it in the files. All of Nicciis Greek recipes are posted

with " Greek " in front of the recipe title. They are throughout the files

section...most in the " main dishes " , " snacks " , " desserts " and " dressings "

files, if I remember correctly. Sorry if this message is too late...if you

have any particular recipes in mind that you can't find, let me know and

I'll get it for ya...just give me a day or so to get back atchya. ;)

I'm karen (bluetulipz), just turned 25, and reside in Alabama. I've

been a lacto-ovo for over 5 years and TRY to avoid dairy and eggs as

a rule of thumb. I use yogurt, low/no fat dairy products, and some

fake meats that contain egg whites. The only time I buy butter and

eggs is when I make cookies at X-mas.

Cooking style? Hmm. Altered Momma style southern cooking and a few

things thrown in. I try to take some of the meals I grew up on, make

them more healthy, compatible with vegetarianism, and use other

spices and flavoring not generally used down here. My folks have an

organic garden so I get all kinds of fresh stuff in the summer and

fall. I love ethnic food: Mexican, Chinese, thai w/o fish in

everything, Indian, Japanese, Ethiopian, Italian, etc. I love trying

out new food and recipes, which is why I like this group so much. I

really like using Indian and Italian spices/herbs.

Still fighting tofu and given up on tempeh...will perfect tofu one

day :)

I like to see recipes with things in them I like, but haven't put

together myself. I've been particularly interested in Niccii's recipe

posts lately. Have yet to try one as of yet, but will have to at some

point. Shawn mentioned adding them to the archive and I would love if

they were some how marked as Greek.

Have a good day,

karen :)

My name is Lori. I live in Boise, ID, where I work in

the IT department of a major computer chip

manufacturer. I have been a strict vegetarian for

four or five months.

Basically, I started eating veg because my father was

placed on a Vegan diet as part of a holistic cancer

treatment, and, as a former professional chef, I

wanted to be able to help my mom out with recipes and

menuing ideas. As a result, I found myself eating

mostly Vegan.

The difference in my life since then has been

profound. By eliminating fatty meats and dairy

products from my diet, I've lost 1 pound per week

since going veg, for a total of 20 pounds now. The

female problems I've suffered from since I was an

adolescent (I'm in my 30s now) have completely

disappeared, and I'm experiencing much, much less pain

from arthritis.

In looking for unique Vegan recipes on the Internet, I

clicked on some of the " wrong " web sites, started

doing some research, saw and read some shocking,

horrible and disgusting things, and my reasons for

maintaining a strict vegetarian lifestyle now has a

lot less to do with my health and a lot more to do

with animal and human rights. Over the weekend, I

read " Fast Food Nation, " and that book opened my eyes

even more. At this point, the only reason I can't

call myself a Vegan is because I still eat some honey

(so heard to find wheat bread without honey) and

because I still can't make myself ask what's in the

bread and pasta when I go out to eat. I eat

exclusively Vegan at home (except for the honey in the

bread), and I'm looking into switching my dogs to a

supplemented vegetarian diet. I'm currently feeding

Solid Gold dog food, which at least isn't tested on

animals and doesn't contain the mystery ingredient,

" meat by-products, " which at least means that they

aren't being fed euthanized pets or road kill.

So far, my husband has expressed very little interest

in going veg. He has cut back on red meat, eats a lot

more fish and seems mostly willing to eat whatever

vegetarian food I put in front of him. I will not

prepare meat in my kitchen anymore, so if he wants it,

he can either go out to eat, or he can cook it

himself. So far, he's been very good about supporting

my choices, and his concern for his own weight and

health may bring him around eventually.

Hah, I don't discriminate...but not being an accomplished chile-head as of

yet, I mainly cook with jalapenos and serranos...maybe one day I'll work my

way up to a yeller habanero...but for now, I'll have fun with the journey.

Know of any chiles that I MUST try? What's your favorite?

While the roadkill possibility is pretty gross, I have to question the idea of

putting animals on a vegetarian diet.

The thing is, animals are pretty much meant to eat meat. Some animals live

solely off of meat, eating little or no plantlife at all. If you were to study

their teeth, digestive systems, etc, you'd see at least some of them were

designed for it. I feel that humans shouldn't eat meat because we are of higher

intelligence and have the ability and physical capacity to subsist off a

meatless diet. Animals live by instinct, and in the wild eat what their body

tells them to eat, which is what they need for health and energy.

However, if people feel the need to do this with their pets, it's not really my

place to say anything, except that please check with your veterinarian to make

sure your pet is getting all the nutrients it needs from meatless food. After

all, your pet doesn't really have a say in what it eats, so it's up to us as the

owners to do what's best for it!
