For whatever reason, red meat can magnify arthritis symptoms and cause inflammation in the joints. I removed all red meat. It made one heck of a difference and I started to feel better in other ways as well. Much less gasieness, just felt " lighter " is the the only word I can use to describe it I guess. I am violently allergic to all fish and seafood so I don't eat that. I do like chicken and turkey and on special occassions will indulge. For me, being 98% vegetarian is a health and financial issue. I couldn't afford to buy the meat even if I wanted to eat it. And eatinng makes me ill, literally. Besides, my DH is a dairy herdsman and as part of his salary he gets a side of beef every year (we haven't been taking it the past few years). These are nice Simmental beef, corn fed, humanely raised, not beef feed lot. Cows, while being very friendly and curious animals are also very dirty ones. A cow thinks nothing of licking a single grain of corn out of his neighbours fresh pile of $%* & . They pee and poop on each other and think nothing of it either. It's really gross. Makes me a little queasy thinking of eating the meat after watching them lick poop. I know that none of that is in the meat but you know, it's just icky. In the US, growth hormones are a consideration. No matter how you look at it, they are not good for the cows or for us. Canada doesn't allow any type of growth hormone in the food industries as of yet. I do eat some dairy - no milk of any kind though, allergies., in the form of cheese and I still get that icky feeling sometimes while eating it even though I know it has been well processed and there aren't any germs left. I do consume eggs from a farmer who free ranges his chickens and cares well for them. The egg/chicken industry is particularlly cruel and I hate to support it. I know it is cruel by the way because I see it all around me, not because I have read it off of an internet site which may or may not know what it is talking about. So more and more I think twice before eating poultry of any kind as well. I know that ethics is a big consideration for a lot of vegans and vegetarians and I do have a great deal of respect for those folks who don't like something and go out of their way to " not " support it. It is a very life altering situation trying to avoid all animal products or products with animal traces in them. I don't have the strength of character and will to live a completely vegan lifestyle. In summing up I will leave you quote that I try to live around every day, An' it harm none, do what ye will - from the Wiccan Rede ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* " When you live in the shadow of insanity, the appearance of another mind that thinks and acts as yours does is something close to a blessed event. I was already monitoring my weight when I first became a vegetarian and noticed about 5-8lbs just " fell off " for no apparent reason. If you think about it, meat is heavy. Workout buffs are always saying muscle weighs more than fat. It's probably a noticeable difference when compared to vegetables and the like.
