Guest guest
Hi there. I just wanted to say thanks for the invitation to join the list. I've been enjoying myself as a lurker. The recipes look great. There's a lot of funny posts and cool-sounding people on the list. I'm not quite a vegetarian yet, but I'm working on it. I've eaten two fishes this month, and I had been eating chickens up until April. I stopped eating pigs and cows around Christmas time. I feel a little better about my health, my ecological footprint, and my spirituality the more I become conscious of my own lifestyle patterns. Someone very close to me eats a mostly vegetarian diet, but she eats fishes and other sea creatures every so often-- no cows, now pigs, no chickens. She gets sick if there is even a hint of pig in her food (accidental, in restaurants, it happens too frequently) -- violent intestinal cramps. She doesn't even desire to eat meat, other than sea creature. Organic foods, especially vegetables and beans, are so good! I love Trader Joe's and Wild Oats, thanks to my close friend. I need to start buying rice and some spices in bulk. I stopped buying cow's milk back in December and switched to Silk Vanilla Soymilk for my cereal and instant Chai teas. I don't miss milk on cereal, but I can't seem to get over my fixations for cheese, ice cream, sour cream, and butter. I try to buy only organic dairy products for myself, but I try not to force my diet on others. When I go to other people's houses or eat at restaurants I'm usually eating whatever they have. There's a coffee shop down the street from me that has Silk available as a creamer, but rarely do places have that option. Rice milk is okay from time to time, but I much prefer soymilk. Vegan cheese-like stuff is good on gardenburgers, but not so good as grilled cheese. And few foods can top Ben & Jerry's One Sweet Whirrled. Vegetarians are a lot more like a social group -- one that is hard to be a part of without learning how to live in the larger society, how to keep friendships with meat-eating and less diet-conscious people. Some of my family members I recently visited didn't know what to make of my diet. They didn't even seem to understand that I don't eat any meat -- no fishes, no chickens, no beefs, no pigs, no turtles, no deers, no lizards ad nauseum. They seemed to think that vegetarians are some sort of skinny, faddish stylistics who don't eat red meat and eat a lot of salads. How could I be a vegetarian (I'm about six feet, 185 pounds)? Anyway, that's my first contribution. Thanks for the invitation. I'm enjoying reading your posts. J Free online calendar with sync to Outlook.
