Guest guest
Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any good veggie/vegan Medieval recipes? Ok, I know that sounds wierd, but I went to a King Arthur Faire yesterday, stood in line at the ONLY food tent for 30 minutes, only to find out they were out of baked potatoes, but they'd be more than happy to sell me a turkey leg. So, it dawned on me that a fun side job would be to run a vegetarian booth at these type events. If only I could think of things other than potatoes and cabbage.... Cheers! I happen to have a major interest in things medieval and cooking in particular. There are loads of vegetarian recipes (okay, that is overstating it a tad) which are perfectly period - vegan is harder, but do-able. I will send you some (in later messages - I like to keep it at one recipe per page), but what you should do is look for Lenten recipes. During Lent, people did not eat meat, although they did eat fish. Butter, cheese, eggs, and milk were also often off the menu - with almond milk being much used. Oh, and don't get me started on the baked potatoes and turkey legs ... I assume that their cola was without ice (this will make sense to Jim Carey fans). Suffice it to say that neither potatoes nor turkey are period for medieval Europe and there is no way King Arthur ate either!
