Fresh durians

My dad has durian plantations back in Southeast Asia. The durians are

genetically modified so as to get the best tasting fruit, shortest grown period,

etc......Durians are also considered " heaty " in the Chinese point of view, so

after eating durians, we would take some salt water to overcome it.

I am surprised that these exotic foods are part of the raw diet, considering

these are not organic and the pesticide/herbicide usage in the plantations back

in these faraway places.

Why is durian in the picture and what is considered a good raw food then?

Thanks for your input!

Hi Stacey,

Raw foodists have varying opinions on whether it's necessary to eat nothing

but organically grown foods. The issue can get complicated but suffice to

say that living in places where our natural foods do not grow for most of

the year requires us to make compromises. Humans are a tropical species by

biological adaptation so naturally the foods grown in the tropics are the

ones that we are best suited for. Durian certainly qualifies, perhaps

better than any other, considering its inherent appeal and fuel value. That

appeal is what motivates me to eat it in spite of what I've heard about the

processes the fruit is subjected to by various entities including farmers

and misguided government agencies. It's a simple cost vs. benefits

analysis.

Best wishes,

Nora
