Guest guest
Hi All, I have access to a large quantity of sweet, organic, tree-ripened green figs. I'll be harvesting them this Friday and selling them for $4/lb., with a 10-pound minimum. If that's more than you can eat, feel free to find somebody to split an order with. To give you some idea how many meals 10 pounds represents, I normally eat about 2-3 pounds per day in the summer, by myself. They are best eaten right away but with judicious use of refrigeration they will probably last 3-4 days. What I normally do is refrigerate them part of the time, then put them out for a few hours. This seems to not greatly affect the flavor or texture. If you've never had tree-ripened figs, don't miss this opportunity! Figs that come directly from the tree are very different from what is available in stores. Figs are so fragile and perishable that they must be picked unripe in order to allow enough time to get them to the commercial market. The skins of unripe figs have a toxic substance that irritates the lips and tongue, in addition to the fact that prolonged refrigeration makes figs chewy and tough. The skin of a tree-ripened fig is tender (and/or easy to peel if you don't like the skin) and does not irritate. For those who care about micronutrients, figs have the highest overall mineral content of all common fruits! A 40-gram (1/4 cup) serving provides 244 mg of potassium, 53 mg of calcium and 1.2 mg of iron. If you want figs, send me an email and give me a phone number where I can reach you on Friday. I will probably set up a meeting place somewhere in North Seattle (160th or thereabouts) on Friday afternoon. Maybe Central Market? Anyone who can't meet me then can pick them up at my place (in Bellevue) on Saturday. Please email me privately if you have questions, unless it's something that may be of interest to the group. Thank you! All the best, Nora
