Being car-free (the other social suicide)

Caroline,

I hesitant to talk much about being car-free on-list, but I can see where it

relates to staying raw - at least I'll try to.

First I must say that I am very fortunate to live where I do because bus service

and bicycling are unusually good here in Morgantown WV, particularly because it

is a university town (WVU). Within 20 minutes biking I can get to grocery

stores that carry Mediterranean, Indian, Vietnamese or American produce.

However, I get most of my stuff delivered right to my door by a produce market

25 miles away that also delivers to all of the restaurants in town. I'm between

a couple of their stops so it doesn't add distance to their route. (I learned

about them when I was biking past on my regular commute to work a few years ago.

I now work at home or in the shop that I run 1 mile from home.) They will get

organic produce for me, but only if I get whole cases. I've never done so.

Ironically, the co-op in town stopped carrying produce when they ran into

financial difficulty last year. (I'm peeved about it. I've stopped going there

altogether even though I still have a membership.) There's a Kroger a few

blocks from my house where I get some organic stuff but the selection and

quality aren't great.

I walk, bike, bus and carpool to get places (and share my knowledge with others

at www.positivespin.org). If biking is your main transportation then I

recommend a sturdy bike that's appropriate to your terrain, and a good-quality

trailer. You'll be amazed at how much you can carry under your own power, with

the right equipment.

In Seattle (and Morgantown) all buses have bike racks. Although there are only

2 slots per bus, I only got bumped once in the 5 years I was using them there.

This makes longer trips possible. You can find some trailers that fold up, so

you could carry one on the bus.

If anyone wants to discuss this further please contact me off-list (or at

RawDailyWisdom), especially if the subject strays

from raw food. I'm happy there is this much interest.

Right now I'm going out for a ride - just for fun.

Nick

Nick,

I love it that you are car free.

In order to afford being raw and organic (80/10/10 majority fruit/lettuce), I

am part of a club that buys bulk straight from wholesalers. One of the main

difficulties of being car free is solving the " problem " of carrying several full

cases of fruits/vegetables from my pick-up spot to my home. I guess renting a

car for a day might be an option... albeit it appears to be an expensive one.

What are your thoughts?

Kind regards,

Caroline

<<I guess the thing is, it's easier and more fun to be car-free than most

people think and I like helping anyone who wants to find out how. >>

Wishing you a happy Spring,
