Guest guest
Uncooked ideals not half-baked By Marcia Vanderlip Wednesday, October 22, 2008 The other day I brought home a bag of freshly dug sweet potatoes and thought about roasting them. Then I remembered I could eat them raw, an idea I wouldn’t have considered until a little more than a week ago, when I met Blazin’ Jane Smith. The 67-year-old grandmother of 21 is blazing a trail for local vegans who enjoy the health benefits of uncooked foods. Her nickname is a tongue-in-cheek term of endearment introduced by family and friends years ago when she was running long distances - at a very slow pace. " I’m not fast, but I have great endurance, " she told me. In any event, Smith’s current daily pace seems pretty quick. I first learned about her support group from a flier with tear-off tabs that read, " Columbia Raw Food Meetup " group and a Web address. A friend had torn one off at a health-food store and then passed it along to me. I didn’t take it seriously at first, mostly because a " raw-food meet-up " seemed a good deal less inviting than, say, a " hot apple pie meet-up.
