Guest guest
Hi Shari, and thanks for asking. In all the species of which I am aware, other than humans, the natural behavior is to follow the food supply. We, on the other hand, seem to expect the food to follow us. Whenever we live and operate at odds with Nature's design for our species, or at odds with Nature's design in a general sense, we " adapt " . Sometimes, such adaptation takes the form of learning to live, as closely as we can, in harmony with at least part of Nature's design. Such is the adaptation of say, the Inuit. At other times, we attempt to remake Nature herself in our own image. And when we choose such a course, we inevitably make compromises that diminish our own vitality and specific capacities. So, to respond to your question directly and honestly, I'd move. To live where we are designed to live is no luxury. And if you have no desire, then you choose the life of compromise as I mentioned, above. There is, in my view, nothing " good " , " bad " , " right " , " wrong " or the like about such choices. We simply consider the outcomes we wish to experience in our lives and then make the choices that we believe will best lead us in the direction of those outcomes. In this context, my response, that I would move, reflects my choice of desired outcomes in my life. I grew up in Cincinnati, then lived in the Chicago area for awhile, then moved to California in 1982. I may move again someday ... but doubtful it will be toward a colder climate. It's just not " me " . I would add that, some years ago, I made a conscious decision that I would give higher priority to spending for food that to most other things. I choose to obtain the best food I can along the way. So I have been known to spend generously on cases of imported fruits during the middle of winter. And I have done so with full knowledge that these fruits come from far away. Why? Because in spite of my commitment to living, in an ecological sense, in harmony with Nature's design, I have come to realize that only when I take care of my own system to the best of my ability am I then able to engage in all other pursuits with matching capacity. That's one of my compromises. You possess the capacity to import citrus from Florida right now... wonderful citrus. You possess the capacity to import dates from California right now... beautiful, freshly harvested dates. And of course you have access to organic bananas throughout the year. And often, these are not even the most expensive choices. Anyway, from my own personal perspective, this is all about choices ... about the outcomes we seek, the compromises we are willing to make, the things we choose to value most. I hope this makes some sense! Best, Elchanan _____ SV Thursday, January 03, 2008 5:04 AM Re: Persimmon taste??? I'm curious to know, Elchanan, what would you eat during a winter in Washington or Michigan or any other state that is not in a warm climate? Not all of us have the luxury or the desire to live where we can make " repeated trips to the tree " for food. Just wondering........
