Guest guest
Hello, I am new to the group and to raw foods. My name is Eva and I live in Edmonds.I haven't gone 100% raw yet but I am plannning to.Soon.For now I am doing a lot of research and buying my appliances and supplies.I have tried a few raw recipes so far and I liked them.Except the marinara sauce I made turned out awful because I didn't realize I used fire roasted sundried tomatoes instead of plain ones.I had to dump the whole thing.I was so mad. My main reason for wanting to try 100% raw is to get healthy.I have a lot of problems.Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, angina, skin problems, depression, frequent and severe colds, constant back pain due to a herniated disc in my lower back, bad knees, obesity,no energy.I want to get off all my medications and lose weight.I want to stabilize my blood sugar and reach a nice even level. I have one good thing going for me,I love all fruits and vegetables. You wouldn't know it by looking at me because I'm so fat.I guess the reason I couldn't lose weight is because I ate all my veggies cooked. And smothered in buttery sauces.I gave up those sauces about 3 weeks ago and have been eating some raw vegetables. But not enough. Found some really good recipes online and I also bought Alissa Cohen's book which I really like,I find it inspirational. I've been trying to find good places to buy raw foods.Have a Safeway very close by and they have a very small organic section. But no raw nuts,no seeds for sprouting.I have found raw nuts at Fred Meyer of all places.I've never had pine nuts before. Now they are my #1 favorite. So sweet and creamy. But so expensive! So are macadamia nuts and I had to order them from ebay because I couldn't find any in the stores, all they have is roasted and salted. So my first question is,where do you all buy your raw nuts and seeds? Is there a store or market around in this area somewhere? One that has lots of good organic produce too? I've looked online and found the shipping is sometimes more expensive then the product itself. My second question is,what can you do with the almond stuff that you have left over from making almond milk? Or any other nut? Because I want to make milk from other nuts too. I will appreciate any help and ideas I can get. Thank you for letting me join your group. Eva

Eva, sounds like you're off to a good start! You should see a shift in your health/energy/metabolism as you shift to more raw foods, especially at 100%. All the fiber and nutrients should help your body work more efficiently. People's bodies react a little differently. Some may have major changes right away. Others may notice changes a little later. I've heard of some heavy individuals not seeing weight loss right away. I've known others who eat all they want and the weight seems to slip off. I'd not worry about it either way. I'd focus on better eating, having more energy, and enjoying feeling better! The rest can be a bonus! > So my first question is,where do you all buy your raw nuts and seeds? > Is there a store or market around in this area somewhere? One that has > lots of good organic produce too? Here are some markets not too far from you. I live in Fremont, but still go to the Shoreline Central Market, periodically. They offer us a great case price on produce. They charge 25% over their case price, which can bring prices way down. This is especially good for families or other households. It is also possible for individuals to team up and buy cases. The store actually has one of the top 5 produce sections in the country for size!!! They have a lot of organic too! For cases, just speak to someone in produce. They also have some raw nuts and seeds in their bulk section nearby. Mann Mills may be the closest to you. It's a medium-sized health food store, but they have some nice produce, as well as bulk items, perhaps a few other raw food options. They also happen to be one of the few places in WA that offer " raw " carob powder. The only other places I know of in WA state that offer it are Madison Market in Seattle and Marlene's Market in Federal Way and Tacoma. It may not be " truly raw " , but is a nice option for raw foodists. Mill Creek Town Center is another of the " Central Market " chains, along with Greenwood Market and Ballard Market. At some point, consider making a trip to Redmond and visit Tom and Susan at the Raw Vegan Source, a raw foods buying club. It's worth the trip. You'll get new inspiration, see new raw products, and find books and equipment. They do have truly raw nuts and seeds (in the frig, which is where they should be!) You can also order online from them and support local folks! Give them a call before visiting. They operate this out of their home, and even arrange special visit times by appointment! Of course there is also SunFood.com out of San Diego, a ginormous online raw food store. BTW, the founder, David Wolfe, will be the keynote speaker at our annual fundraising Gala on February 16 at the Columbia Tower club (.org). Most of the flavor is gone after the milk-making process, though some people use it for making cookies and crackers. Jeff
