Guest guest
Hi All, I traveled to California over the weekend and shipped our UNpasteurized almonds to Seattle, and they will arrive on Friday. They are a mixture of two different varieties -- Sonora and Carmel. The Sonoras are large, light colored, flat and sweet tasting and the Carmels are smaller, rounder, darker and have more of an almond flavor. I didn't ask what the ratio was but it looked like they were about half and half. Both varieties are very fresh and taste great. They were harvested last Thursday morning and shelled on Friday. These almonds have undergone absolutely no processing other than shelling. (Almonds are normally subjected to fumigation, in addition to pasteurization.) I've checked labels on 6 or 7 different brands of " raw " almonds in the past few weeks and none have any indication of the fact that they are pasteurized, nor which process was used (heat or chemicals), even though pasteurization is now the law on all almonds sold after September 1, 2007. If you placed an order, please email me to arrange for pick up. I can have orders ready anytime after Friday evening. I encourage people to consolidate travel by having one person pick up many orders, if it can be worked out. Alternatively, I'll be attending the Doug Graham lecture next week and could bring orders with me. I may have some available for sale for people who didn't place orders but I won't know till all the advance orders are filled. I'll keep the list posted. I also finally made contact with the owner of a small pistachio grove I found on a previous trip. I've been waiting a long time to try freshly harvested pistachios because although I've always loved the taste I've usually found them to be hard, dry and difficult to chew. These nuts taste great and are moist and soft. The farm is very small and has not gone through the organic certification process but is committed to using absolutely no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or fumigants. The farmer normally sends his crop to farmers markets in San Francisco but I arranged to buy as much of it as there is demand. The nuts are currently being harvested and dried (on a table, in the open air). The farmer will need to know how many I want before this Thursday the 27th. I shipped 20 pounds with the almonds and will have these for sale until they run out at $7/lb. (minimum 1 lb.). Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you! Guest guest
CS--I think if you read the previous posts your questions will be answered. If not, I'd be happy to answer. Thanks to those of you who added your order to the database already. Did any of you have a problem figuring it out? I was just told that I left out some steps in my instructions, but the person didn't mention specifically what I left out. If anyone has any feedback, please let me know. I want to make this as easy as possible for everyone. Regards, Nora
