I saw Nora's response, and think that's fine. In the LSHS, T.C. Fry gave <snip> _____ Hi all, Many would disagree with some of TC's scores (apples are WAY overrated, for example), and certainly with his quite low cutoff of 30 on his own 100-point scale. But as a general concept, his approach may satisfy some people. And I have indeed met chemists who have stated that bananas are " nature's perfect food, " THEIR words, not mine, in conversations where they expressed curiosity about my way of eating. Regarding dates, there is just a lot of misunderstanding. It is indeed true that dates have lower water content than other fruits -- about 20-25% water, vs. 70% for bananas and 85-95% for most other fruits. But this in no way makes them a less viable food, and there is no reason whatsoever, in my opinion, to worry about eating dates, PROVIDED THAT: - they are organically grown (or better) - they are not steamed, frozen, or dehydrated - they are properly stored. I eat 5-15 dates almost every day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year (except for legal holidays, of course :). I have been doing this for several years now. A couple of times I did get a " sugar high " from eating dates, and in EVERY such case, I ate them too quickly, not chewing them fully, not pausing for a few moments between dates. In these cases, I did not fully observe my body's own satiation signal, and so I ate too many dates. But that was due to my distraction, it was not caused by the dates. In fact, people have been eating and thriving on dates for millennia, and of ALL the foods available today, dates are more true to their original design in Nature than most others. (Many tropical fruits are true to their original design, or at least not many generations removed. But most of the foods eaten by people in North America and Europe are FAR removed, largely by human-induced hybridization, from their origins in Nature.) In my opinion, there is NO problem with eating dates, and properly stored, they maintain better in a fresh state than almost any other fruit or vegetable. The date harvest occurs during August-September, and thereafter some may perceive them as no longer fresh. In the most literal sense, I agree. But dates simply do not degrade substantively, in my experience, when stored properly. The dates in my home, carefully stored for months, are far fresher, by every means of observation available to me, than many other fruits that are only a few days to a week old. This stability arise precisely because of the combination of high sugar content and lower water content. As for issues regarding teeth, once we let go of the delusion that sugar in fresh fruits causes cavities, then we can easily let go of any application of that notion to dates. I do not eat a pile of dates right before bedtime, but then I do not eating anything else right before bedtime, either, so I apply no " special treatment " in that regard. Similarly, I brush my teeth, always sans any cleaning agent, after I eat dates in the same manner as I do after I eat anything else. So again, I perceive no special treatment required. Lane _____ :) I do, however, eat them on religious holidays. Now if a religious holiday happens to coincide with a legal holiday, then I presume the first amendment takes priority, and I eat the dates in spite of the legal holiday. I always place ecclesiastical law above secular law, you know.... -- ------------------------ [ SECURITY NOTICE ] ------------------------ rawfood .
