Doctor suspects possible appendicitis and wanted me to have a CAT scan. It required drinking barium. I freaked out. Can anyone tell me if it's a good idea or bad to drink this stuff. The pain is still there but not getting much worse which makes me think it's something other than appendix. I thank you for any input. On a happier note... On the way back from parking my car, (perennial NYC pastime), I passed a market with a box of very ripe mangoes going two for a dollar. That's cheap for around here. I bought four and have munched my way through three of them today already. So I'm having a mono mango day. Interestingly I got two different kinds. The big fat red ones are definitely better. However, if you let the doctors go in and operate on you, the odds are that they'll remove it for you, healthy organ or not, just to save you the trouble of having it removed in the future. (I kid you not, many doctors DO that!!! Last time I checked, this was considered " acceptable practice " and " ethical conduct. " ) Beyond this, we would need MUCH more information to attempt further discussion. As for the barium, they tag it with radioactive isotopes. The radioactive components then show up on their little imaging machine. By observing where the barium goes or is blocked, they can sometimes determine something interesting, and occasionally even useful. Now as to why anyone would ever choose to drink radioactive isotopes (other than in a real emergency), well, .....
