Guest guest
Joy King [joy] Thursday, June 23, 2005 4:44 PM RE: [Rawschool] Fruit quality - Apples So 'E', what about those of us that get a 'gag' reflex from anything mushy/soft - do you think this is something 'trained' or just a difference in taste preference. While I love fruit more than anything, there is nothing that makes my stomach turn more than a mushy apple or banana (aka spotted!!)...my produce guy knows this well! I normally go into the produce department and spend some time trying to find what looks/smells/sounds good to me...and applies that aren't crunchy don't do it for me....is this just another result of my training OR is the product inferior OR is there really a biological preference going on here?? Any thoughts on this? How do I retrain myself to appreciate mushy/ripe fruits?? I would love to love spotted bananas! _____ Hi Joy, Pardon my putting it this way, but perhaps we are talking apples and oranges here. :) I'll use banananananananas as my example. When I refer to a spotted banana, perhaps I am not sufficiently specific in my description. When bananas in my home start to spot, they remain firm for at least a couple of days (or longer varying with weather and the sum of the lunar digits). Then, at some point, the bananas begin to become noticeably mushier. I eat them whole when they are full yellow and through those days of early spotting, then I do one of two things: - I refrigerate (part of) the remainder, to slow the spotting/breakdown process. - I plow (part of) the remainder into smoothies. I do not eat the bananas as they enter a gelatinous state, that is a clear sign of fermentation, I believe, and any such bananas are compost. As for apples, I find that whether they are crunchy or mushy varies largely with the variety, I choose crunchy/crisp varieties. I can't stand a mushy apple. Perhaps one day we'll find an opportunity to go produce shopping together, then each of us may have a better what the other actually means. Words can be limiting.... Oh, one more thing...I find that the so-called gag reflex is not a reflex at all, in most cases. Whenever I observe someone with a sensitive " gag reflex, " in almost every case, I notice that the mind begins to initiate the " gag " before the food (or whatever) actually enters the mouth. In other words, I've noticed some association with anticipation. This is actually something we could explore together, even by phone, if you are in an adventuresome mood about it. Best, Elchanan PS: The phrase " sum of the lunar digits " is a technical accounting term, which translates into ordinary English roughly as " !#$^% <!#$^% & @%^!$> & %^!$#!!!!
