Guest guest
> I saw an article the other day that said that many people with that > degree these days, end up in " food science " interestin, huh? > Bob: Yes, true. Unfortunately we don't teach ethics or social responsibility just " rugged individualism " that is CYOA or get your fortune first. Clever but irresponsible biochemists solved the problem of citrus oil separating to the top in soft drinks by adding toxic bromine to unsaturated oil and adding the heavy brominated vegetable oil to the drinks to emulsify the citrus oil. (We can have people shaking up their drink before each sip can we? or have them drinking straight citrus...LOL This creation will develop a whole new group of bacteria, fungi etc. that adapt to tolerate or thrive on brominated veggie oil. To my knowledge since the times of the Roman Caesar only one animal / plant, a mollusk in the Medeatarean sea, used the element bromine. The bromine compound was harvested for a purple clothing dye. Knowledge can be applied in many ways. I sometimes have to smile when I hear natural hygienists try to explain the body's processes just a I had to smile when my chemistry and biochemistry professors would brush away my concerns for some ot the bio- chemical experiments we are conducting on each other. They would teach us the importance of catalysts and inhibitors one week and dismiss the effects of new and untested substances the next week... One of my yoga students told me they pumped a seat mate about her employment. Finally she, a PhD. in chemistry, said the formula's and diagrams she was working on were ideas for creating a bun material for McDonalds. The wanted to create a material, mostly of air, that would collapse in the stomach and give their " guests " the room to purchase more of McDonald's entertaining wares (we can't really call what they sell as food now can we?) The DVD of " Supersize Me " has an interview with the author of fast food nation. He talks about the law that allows companies to say " artificial flavor " to describe a concoction of 40 different chemicals. It is so amazing more people aren't sick or dying even younger...
