Guest guest
Hi Scott and all, There is no raw food containing B-12 other than raw flesh and that is only because animals don't bother to wash their produce before they consume it. ;-) Otherwise, almost any organically grown root food, green leafy vegetable or fruit will have B-12 *_ON IT_*. This is why one should not wash their produce too much as the B-12 and bacteria will be washed off. Just a side note to add to Elchanan's explanation, chemical fertilizers are also partly to blame for the looming B-12 deficiency seen everywhere. The cyano-bacteria do fine with normal earthly found elements but don't fare so well with the laboratory derived concoctions so widely used in agriculture today. Please correct me if I am wrong here. _____ Hi Don, I am not 100% certain, and in fact I believe the research itself is a bit on the inconclusive side, but I have the impression that where soil is rich in B12-producing bacteria, the bacteria DO find their way into the plants, including the fruits and leaves. Washing things certainly doesn't help, but it may or may not be of great consequence, in the larger scheme of things. I have a feeling we really need to find funding for fresh " from square one " research on this topic, however. This is one case where " removing the cause of the problem " is such a massive undertaking that some may be forced, as a matter of circumstances and not from any supporting philosophy or belief that it is the " right " choice, to supplement from time to time. The simple fact is that, at present, not enough strong information exists to warrant any clear-cut solution. IF you have the resources to grow even a portion of your own food, then compost compost compost. That supports these and " all " bacteria/organisms inherent to a flourishing ecosystem. But even in this case, after reviewing the literature/research to some extent (but not exhaustively), we are uncertain as to what it would really take to go from soil where these bacteria are virtually absent to an ecosystem where they flourish to such an extent, that they poop shows up inside the fruits and leaves. If anyone THINKS he/she may be experiencing a B12 deficiency, there is a fairly well-regarded test, and the sublingual supplements appear to be relatively benign and effective. We STRONGLY recommend that you NOT rely upon any " alternative " diagnosis techniques in this regard, this test really does appear accurate. However, even with the test, there is considerable uncertainty regarding how much B12 we need. I simply do not believe that anyone knows at this point.
