Guest guest
Please see below Laurie's message for the original post between Kay and Gypsy.. YOU WROTE: In my opinion supervison is more neccessary for assistance/comfort with the personal issues than any of the physical stuff. We do NOT agree that the physical body is generally safe in a fast and that one only needs assistance with emotional issues/self- doubt/etc. In a longer fast (more than 7 days), the body can begin to cleanse in some very painful and frightening ways. With decreased energy and possibly reduced ability to cope and think clearly, fasters can find themselves in serious trouble. Somebody must be present to determine whether symptoms represent a cleanse or a major problem. For example, Tim supervised a man who was 350 pounds and could only fast one week because he ran out of potassium. Symptoms included a drop in blood pressure and irregular heart beat. Tim made an instant judgment to break the fast in an unusual manner: with very dilute banana smoothies. Everything returned to normal within 24 hours. This is one small example of the serious nature of fasting without supervision. On several fronts, people may be lacking in reserves, and not knowing how to handle those situations can cause great harm, or worse. Fasting allows something that nothing else achieves. Not in my experience anyway. Everything feels so squeaky clean for starters. One cannot know the difference until it is experienced! What's more, every simple piece of food tastes heavenly and the body gives you stronger signals about what not to ingest. The nasal pasages feel so clear also. Body odour pleasant. During the fast body odour can become more unplesant. The tongue coated with yeast - in my case. What usually happens is the experience of peaks and trofts - That includes mood also. The mind is very restless in my own case. This is a HUGE ordeal. However breakthrough insight and freedom bring about new growth. Whilst the body becomes weak and frail toward the end of the fast, my mental feeling is one of strength. Its like having climbed a mountain - All for the joy of the view! I will be doing another long fast in July for several weeks. I can post my experiences afterward if it is useful to you? I am fasting because I suffer with severe colitis. I am currently following a completely 'fat-free' fruit diet (no avocado/seeds etc) to enable my body in balancing yeast overgrowth which is prolific. My fast is also to assist facing personal issues. Always a good way to do it - there will be nowhere to " run " ! In my opinion supervison is more neccessary for assistance/comfort with the personal issues than any of the physical stuff. The mind seems to be the only factor that can hinder or even sabotage the process. The body is mostly quite safe doing it's own thing.. Unfortunately I donot have the finances to go away on a supervised fast. However, I will be away from my home with the company of someone I can trust. Be in touch again then..
