Overeating: fasting fanaticism and diet fanaticism

 

Key concepts

 

1. Calorie restriction in the usual sense is not the best way to

break the habit of overeating.

 

2. reducing diets are always frustrating and frequently unsuccessful.

 

3. Step should be a thorough indoctrination into the precepts

of

the hygienic system

 

4. The next step is to plan and implement a program of meeting

all the bodies of nutritional requirements and a pleasant,

satisfying, rational manner, with no redundancy or surfeit, which

will tend to gradually educate perverted appetites, and produce such

a sense of well being that cravings will become easier to handle and

gradually all but disappear.

 

5. The initial period will require mind control and firmness

of

purpose – but the potential rewards for those who have determination

to succeed are almost incalculable.

 

6. The goal must be determined, plans may be, and the efforts

continued until successes attained. The only failure isn't giving up.

 

7. A simple approach is to first eliminate cooked foods to the

greatest extent possible.

 

8. Rawfood diets improve health and develop an inner feeling

of

cleanness that causes people to want to reject such habits as

smoking, drinking and overeating.

 

9. Most people find that a three-day fast, followed by a

twelve-meal-a-week program (fasting one day and two meals daily the

other six days) is a practical shortcut to the objective of

eliminating the habit of overeating

 

10. Some people may do better on a bimonthly 36-hour fast and

alternating between two and three meals daily.

 

Salient facts

 

1. The body chemistry is influenced by the food that is eaten.

 

2. When the diet is altered and maintained for a given length

of

time, the enzymes, body fluids and glandular secretions become

increasingly adapted to the influences and requirements of the new

food program, just as the organism necessarily struggles to adapt

when it is bombarded with junk food, or too much of any kind of food.

 

3. The important difference is that the prior adaptation to

the

misguided food program involves health deterioration, while the rate

adjustment in the direction of an ideal food program is towards

improved health.

 

4. The hygienic program of eating and living is in itself a

rational system of obtaining the objective of appetite control

 

5. There is a built-in way to control in a food program

which includes a large percentage of fresh, whole, uncooked

vegetables and fruits.

 

6. Such a vitamin and mineral rich, higher residue, fibrous

diet

is not nearly as conducive to overeating as the conventional diets.

 

7. All the various programs which have been offered to the

public, those which have been either harmless or least harmful and

have enjoyed even a modicum of success, are those which include fresh

fruits, fresh vegetables, and exercise in the regimen, and thus began

to approach the hygienic system.

 

8. Overeaters anonymous has helped many people.

 

9. Control of the body begins by control of the mind

 

10. Thinking must be changed so that all that is truly desired

is

a normal amount of food.

" if you live genuinely hygienically, all you need, because of the

polluted environment, is a once-a-year rest and " tune-up " fast of

about eight to fourteen days. "

" actually, the only way to improve one's health, or eventually

achieve normal weight, is by healthful living. And the fast only

expedites the process, especially in its initial phases. "

 

" regular, adequate and vigorous exercise is of the utmost importance… "

 

" the only correct diet for regular use is one that meets all the

nutritional needs of the body in a rational manner, without threat or

stress. The hygienic food program does just that. "

 

Then the author, Hannah Allen listed all types of diets from high

protein diets to low carbohydrates to the Atkins and Stillman diets,

the Scarsdale diet, the Beverly Hills diet, the Pritikin diet, the

weight watchers, the last chance diet, steroid blockers, sucrose

polyester, the golden door, plastic coating, Cambridge diet,

stapling, appetite suppressants, and concluded by saying that " … And

one learns it is possible to lose 10 lbs. in two weeks eating almost

any crazy combination of foods, as long as calories are drastically

reduced. But what happens afterwards? Back to the old yo- yo

syndrome! "

 

" Magic formulas can eventually turn out to be wolves in sheeps'

clothing, but rational living and intelligent diet planning, working

with nature, instead of trying to outwit her, never become obsolete. "

 

And then the catalog included some direct quotations from " The

Natural Food of Man " by Hereward Carrington, pages to 266 to 268, as

follows:

 

" Millions of human beings perished by disease, in all periods of

life, from excessive alimentation and overeating. Generally, they

are cut off by disease long before they have lived out their lives,

and often prematurely, and the chief cause of all such death is, I

must insist, over-eating. Period. Over-eating is the chief cause of

all diseases; and disease shortens and destroys life.

 

It is therefore true, beyond all question, that in all countries

where human aliment is abundant and easily procured, gluttony or

excessive alimentation is decidedly the greatest source of disease

and suffering and premature death known to man. "

" Hygienic eating and living produce gradual improvement in metabolism

and assimilation. The initial result of changing to a hygienic

program is usually a weight loss, followed by a leveling off, which

continues for varying periods of time, after which, due to

improvement in assimilation,we can be maintained on lesser quantities

of food. "
