[Rawschool] RE: RE: Symptoms

Elchanan,

some information about headaches would be very much appreciated! Jess

suffers terribly from them from time to time. she's told me her

headaches occur after long periods of being in the sunlight and humidity

(we live in Nebraska, where summer heat can be coupled with intense

humidity). i believe that sometimes they also come from heavy stress and

sleep deprivation (during the weekdays she wakes up at anywhere from

4:45-6 a.m. for her job), as well as the most obvious factor for any

symptom: diet.

Jess is beginning to become more interested in raw foods and NH after a

healthy period of skepticism (which i imagine stems from watching me

learn and sift through much of the fear-mongering and false claims that

are so prevalent in the raw " world " currently). she was telling me last

night that a typical weekday for her includes coffee in the morning, a

small piece of bread or muffin at mid-morning, and then nothing until

around 6pm when she'll eat a pear or a banana. she often feels pressure

to eat a meal of cooked food sometimes minutes before she goes to bed

(bedtime falls between 10pm and midnight) because she's so hungry. she

also occasionally snacks on processed vegetarian/vegan frozen foods,

cheese, chips and hummus. until recently she hardly ever included greens

in her diet, but she's taken to juicing lately (which is a wonderful

step in the right direction); i think her favorite is

carrot-apple-spinach-beet. so i'd estimate (and i may be off on this)

that she consumes about 70% cooked and 30% raw foods.

she loves kiwi, pear, bananas and tomatoes but usually only has one or

two a day. yesterday i told her about mono-eating fruit, but she is

afraid that things like bananas will cause her blood sugar to rapidly

rise and make her teeth hurt.

i may ask her to write you or the list personally if she feels

comfortable with it, and if you aren't too backed up with other

questions from other folks?

thanks again for your presence here and the lovely clarity and knowledge

that you bring to this list, Elchanan!

_____

Hi Adam, sounds as if your partner could use a good dose of health! :):)

From what you have written, she is fortunate only to experience headaches,

but this good fortune will not continue indefinitely, as I'm sure you are

aware. Eventually, more challenging symptoms will emerge if she does not

chart a new course.

The headaches are probably (without further information) an indication of

the body attempting to cleanse and protect itself at the same time. As

toxins carried in the blood toward eventual elimination pass through the

brain region, the body constricts the blood vessels there. This reduces the

surface area, minimizing passage of the toxins into the brain region. Once

the toxins pass, the vessels are typically returned to " normal " size. But

during the is period of constriction, headache commonly results.

Please note that a healthy balance between activity and rest provides the

foundation for health, even before food. (This is why fasting works SO

well!!) So if she is chronically sleep-deprived, then dietary changes alone

will not be enough to create health (though it may be enough to take out

those headaches).

Sounds like she starves herself all day, then gorges at night, correct? This

sounds like a form of binge-and-purge, in other words, a self-destructive

use of food to express emotional needs not being met. If this observation is

on the right track, the we are looking at some important emotional issues,

probably some underlying subconscious beliefs/programming. Fascinating

stuff, we can accomplish much, al long as a person is willing to commit to

his/her own health.

I am happy to correspond with her, or perhaps best with both of you, as you

seem very eager to support and encourage her in this. If she is willing to

discuss in plain view, then others can benefit as well, but either mode of

communication is fine with me. Please note that, based upon my present

impression, some direct interaction may be constructive, particularly to

deal with the emotional/subconscious side of things. But we can definitely

begin here.

Elchanan
