hello all...

after I'd read all the hype about the book, I decided to finally read

it.

I can save you just over 200pp. of reading what reads like a raw rant

you might find on a bottle of Dr. Bonner's Castile Mineral

soap...that flavor, by this sentence:

Cooked food is poison. Almost every chapter ends with that line.

If you're never read *anything*, like zip, nada, nothing about raw

food, you might get some benefit from the first 206 pp.

Otherwise, I recommend just skipping immediately to Appendix C on p.

207, entitled: Studies and Experiments. This Appendix lists in

enough detail to understand them, 14 different experiments. good

reading...

it has cats, rats, humans, etc.

and then you'll come to Appendix D - Vegetarian Diet vs. Meat-

Centered Diet - Facts and Statistics (2000. Here you'll find what was

for me an *amazing* collectin of facts and statistics, broken down

into 14 headed sections, with such headings as " Humans and Livestock "

or " Medical Schools & Nutritional Studies " or " Meat, Dairy and Egg

Industries " <== every category is fabulous!

some of what I considered the gems:

61. Number of U.S. Medical schools: 125

62. Number of U.S. Medical schools with a required course in

nutrition: 30

63. Training in nutrition received during 4 years of medical school

by the average U.S. physician: 2.5 hours

64. Percentage of the U.S. National Cancer Institute's budget

devoted to nutritional studies: less than 1%

----

79. Meat, dairy, and egg industries claim there is no reason to be

concerned about your blood cholesterol asl long as it is: " Normal "

80. Risk of dying of a disease caused by clogged arteries

(artherosclerosis) if yoiur blood cholesterol is " Normal " : over 50%

81. Risk of dying of a disease caused by clogged arteries

(artherosclerosis) if you do not consume saturated fat and

cholesterol: 5%

82. Leading sources of saturated fat and cholesterol in American

diets: meat, dairy products, and eggs.

--

96. The Meat Board tells you: " Today's meats are low in fat. "

97. The Meat Board shows you: A serving of beef they claim has " only

300 calories "

98. The Meat Board does not tell you: The serving of bef they show

you is only 3 ounces (85vgrams), which is half the size of an average

serving of beef, and had been surgically de-fatted with a scalpel.

(bob note: and I guess that's a *lot* less than the 16 - 32 ounce

portions I used to pack away in my meat-eating days....arrgghh...)

99. The dairy industry tells you: Whole milk is 3.5% fat.

100 The dairy industry does not tell you: that 3.5% figure is based

on weight and most of the weight in milk is water.

101. The dairy industry does not want you to know: the amount of

calories as fat in whole milk is 50%.

----

132. The United States Deparmtnet of Agriculture (USDA) tells you:

Your meat is inspected.

133. The USDA does not tell you: less than 1 out of every 250,000

slaughtered animals is tested for toxic chemical residues.

134. The dye used for many years by the USDA to stamp

meats " Choice " , " Prime, " or " U.S. No. 1 USDA " : Violet Dye No.l 1

135. Current status of Violet Dye No. 1 : Banned as a proven

carcinogen.

---

149. Number of animals killed for meat per hour in the U.S.: 500,000

150. Occupation with highest turnover rate in the U.S.:

Slaughterhouse worker

and on the list goes...grand fun...

and the book ends with this :

Real eyes realize real lies.

I'd give it a 6 out of ten...

all the best,

Bob (fellow journeyman)
