Guest guest
Hi, folks, Just wanted to share a story that made me feel sad on a couple of levels. There is a young boy (I believe 10 years of age) who was admitted to a local hospital with severe sepsis; the only thing they could seem to connect it with was a couple of cuts on his arms or legs, where the infection may have entered. Within days, the tissues and muscles on his extremities, arms and legs, was severely affected, and, long story short, he has had to have one foot amputated, just below the ankle, the other leg amputated below the knee, one hand at the wrist, and the other hand was partially saved, with surgery being used to help him retain his first finger and thumb. He is apparently out of the woods now, and since they were at one point expecting him to die, for him to be alive is very good news. I've been getting regular updates (the hospital has a care-page set up, where you can sign up and get regular reports from the family as things progress), and in the last couple of days, as this boy begins to be taken off a variety of tubes, etc. his mom has been allowed to start giving him things to drink that he has been requesting. What has he been asking for? Sunkist orange soda, drinkable yogurts and vanilla milkshakes. And this is what he is being given. Knowing what I know now (and continue to learn) about nutrition and our bodies, I found myself feeling deeply saddened by this picture. I in no way mean to place judgment on the family. Just knowing how much sugar, chemicals, etc., are in all those products, being placed into a severely weakened body that has experienced such trauma....it's hard to find the words. I am not sure why I am sharing this, exactly, it's just been weighing on me, and I needed a place to share it. Just very sad. Peace, Valerie Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected.
