Guest guest
Micki Nesbit [aroo2u] Thursday, May 12, 2005 8:00 AM [Raw Food] Mainaing Raw in Society Unfortunately for me and probably the vast majority of people in most societies, we have been conditioned to appreciate and savor food since it is an intregal part of most importsnt events in our lives as well as it is used to deal with a variety of emotions. Food takes care of us/meets our needs on several levels - physical needs (to maintain health and to help us meet special health challenges), emotional needs, cultural/ethnic needs, religious needs, and interpersonal needs. _____ Hi Micki and all, I wonder whether you would consider a rather large paradigm shift? I agree that we have been conditioned in many ways regarding the role of food in our lives. But after that statement, we travel different roads. Micki, your language, while seemingly innocuous on the surface, strikes me as a strong expression of victimhood. I believe we have free choice in such matters. Food is only " integral " as and how each of us chooses, and not one bit more. When you write " IT is used to deal with..., " I wonder whether you would be willing instead to say something like, " I use food to deal with.... " In other words, make a conscious choice to move yourself from victimhood to full personal responsibility for your own well-being and for your own acts. You write: " Food takes care of us.... " May I suggest that food sits on a plate and does not one thing more. We take care of ourselves -- however well or poorly at any given moment. Our hands pick up the food, our mouths chew (hopefully and swallow it. These are among our own freely made choices, in each and every moment. I realize that, at first, such a paradigm shift may seem daunting. But let us remember that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I encourage you, and everyone else whose present perceptions may be reflected in your words above, to undertake that journey, one step at a time.
