Guest guest
Hello All! I read this book late last week. Here are some of my thoughts: Complete Title: On Nutrition and Physical Performance: A Handbook for Athletes and Fitness Enthusiasts Author: Dr. Douglas N. Graham, DC available from: www.foodnsport.com Length: 89 pp. Table of Contents: Acknowledgements Forward Introduction 1: Nutritional Clarity 2: Sound Athletic Recovery 3: Sugars 4: Mineral Salts 5: Water 6: Rest and Sleep 7: Protein 8: Fat 9: Starches 10: Vitamins 11: Enzymes 12: Weight Control 13: Stimulants 14: Food Combining 15: Bananas and... 16: Tips for Athletic Recovery 17: Sample Meals for Athletes 18: Sports Drinks 19: The Vegetarian Athlete Conclusion About the Author Recommended Reading List --- From his website: " Among Dr. Graham's gifts are his ability to explain the complexities of anatomy, biology, chemistry, and physiology in terms that are easy to understand. An inspiration to others, he has followed a raw-vegan regimen for twenty-five years and has been vegetarian for over thirty years. He is living proof that eating whole, fresh, ripe, raw, organic food is the way to achieve vibrant health and vitality! " Based upon my read of the book, I couldn't agree more. Doug also consults with several HUGE sports names, including Martina Navratilova. Here's how I found the book: (0=low; 10=high) Clarity: 10, exceptionally clear Focus: 10, on point, with several items that I found immediately implementable (see below for examples) Usefulness: 10, very practical Fun: 9 (when the cover has a picture of a Gorilla like animal clinging to a caricature of the Empire State Building, holding fruits in his free hand and foot (after all, he has to hold onto the building with the other limbs, yes? lol!) whilst saying " I get my protein from FRUIT! " , I knew it was going to be fun. and I think the inscription around the outline of the cover picture says something like: " Whole, Ripe, Raw, Organic Fruits and Vegetables....one case at a time until full " Cost: 8 (it was like $15, maybe..) Value: 10 the Quick story: I played tennis on Saturday, and I knew I'd be at it for a while, with back to back USTA matches scheduled. I prepared, and took with me, some of Doug's recommended homemade sports drinks (basically, a watered down " smoothie " ). see chapters 18 and 16 for more details and logic. I was able to play the entire 5.5 hours with high energy. Previously, I'd be unusually tired for the 2nd match. (for any tennis fans, I won the first match 4 and 2; lost the 2nd one, 4-6,6-4, 5-7. good fun) I enjoyed the book, and if you're into fitness and/or sports, you might also! Have fun. all the best, Bob
Guest guest
Thanks for sharing this, Bob....this is one of his books I had not yet seen; it looks like it would be a good investment. Guest guest
Bob~ Thanks so much for your thorough and thoughtful critique of this book! I have been hesitant to order any of Dr. Graham's materials because when I ordered from him years ago I got very shoddy service, and when the materials *finally* made it here, I wasn't very impressed with what I received. Perhaps I will re-consider ordering some of his materials based on your evaluation of this book! thanks, Leslie
Guest guest
You might want to check on various products here before you purchase, as a rule; a lot of folks here have used a lot of materials, and will probably have good input for you on a variety of things. Could save you a few dollars that you then could apply to the raw food budget! :-) Peace, Valerie " chai_mama " <chai_mama wrote: Bob~ Thanks so much for your thorough and thoughtful critique of this book!
