Guest guest
lovingkatz [sgkatz] Thursday, May 05, 2005 5:48 AM [Raw Food] Nuts and Seeds Hi to all. New to this group. Do too many nuts and seeds cause tooth problems? Stan _____ HI Stan, and welcome! They can set up the condition for cavities/tooth and gum degeneration, both because of high-fat and hard (indigestible) fiber. Eaten in small quantities from time to time, should not be a problem (unless you already have oral health problems). Eaten daily by the handful, could cause problems over time, won't show up right away. Guest guest
Elchanan~ You have mentioned cutting down on fat consumption, but I am wondering aprox. how much fat (how many seeds, nuts, avos) are ideal in a week? I am trying to cut down my fat, but I would like my answer in terms of how much/many (not in fat grams). (I won't do nutridiary--I can't look at food in such a scientific way) I am thrilled to have you back in the group! Your input has always appeared to me to be very thoughtful & considerate. thanks, Leslie

Your input has always appeared to me to be very thoughtful & considerate. thanks, Leslie _____ Hi Leslie, Thanks so much for your kind appreciation. I'm glad to be back, too!!! Regarding those nuts and seeds...Take an imaginary person eating 2,000 calories per day, or 14,000 calories per week. On a WEEKLY basis, if his/her target for fat calories is 10% or less, then the maximum calories from fat for the week is 1,400. IF this person is otherwise eating a high-fruit + greens diet, then he/she is probably consuming about 4% of calories from fat from those foods, roughly 550 calories per week (rounding off a bit). This leaves a MAXIMUM of about 850 calories available for all other (overt) fats -- avocado, nuts, seeds, coconut, etc. There are roughly 500-700 calories from fat in 1/4 pound of nuts, depending upon the variety. Taking 600 as an average, this means that our imaginary person could consume 1/4 pound of nuts and one avocado (about 220 calories from fat in a 6-ounce edible portion -- after removing the peel and pit) per week and stay within the 10%-fat guideline (given the original goal, maximum 10% total calories from fat). Specific examples: 50 mac nuts (a bit more than 5/6 cup) 100 almonds (a bit more than 4/5 cup) 3/4 cup sunflower or flax seeds CONCLUSION: Suggested MAXIMUM quantities for nuts and seeds for someone who eats about 2,000 calories/day are: - With no avocado, 1 cup total of nuts/seeds PER WEEK - With one avocado, about 3/4 cup total nuts/seeds PER WEEK - With two avocados, about 1/2 cup total nuts seeds PER WEEK Hope this is helpful! Guest guest
Elchanan~ Thanks so much for the fat-per-week information! It is so easy (for me!) to over-eat the nuts/seeds avocadoes & not even be aware of it. This information is very helpful & I will consider if carefully as I choose the foods to eat. many thanks, Leslie
